The seventh annual gathering and sports of the Caledonian Society of Wellington was held on Friday on the Basin Reserve, and, despite rough usage from the clerk of the weather, proved to be a complete and grati fying success. At the commencement of the proceedings the rain fell heavily, and seemed as if about to last the entire day. Two of the less important evant3 w ere got off; and than about 11.30 a meeting of tho committee took place, and it was decided to postpone the meeting till one o’clock. Shortly after this postponement the sky cleared, and in a very short time it was fine weather, and continued dry all the rest of the day although it turned very chilly after 5 o’clock. The office bearers did the light thing, as things turned out, in taking a postponement till 1 o’clock, last yet,r the woather played them a scurvy trick. It obliged them to adjourn from the forenoon till tho following day, and then cleared up brightly for the afternoon, but rained with dogged pertinacity on tho following day. The judges, the energetic and courteous Secretary (Mr Geo. J. Reich), and all the olfioe bearers are entitled to the heartiest congratulations for the really spiiited manner in which they carried out tho sports. Although thrown some two or three hours out of time by the rain, they carried through their programme in it 3 entirety, and had everything finished by 6 o'clock, and without receiving a single protest. The hanrticapper must also be complimented upon the excellent way in which he had done his work. One of the prettiest features of the day’s proceedings was the Maypole dancing of twenty little boys and girls, whom Mr R. P. Johnson had trained for the purpose. Although only three weeks in training, and despite tne facts that they are smaller childien than be has previously drilled for this dance and that the wind somewhat interfered with tho free play of tho ribbons, the youngsters performed very accurately the live figures that were set down for them. Three of these figures were ancient and two of them invented by Mr Johnson. Miss Elsio Baldwin was elected by her companions Queen of the May, Besides the attraction of the sp -rts, there were on tho grounds three morry-,o rounds and two stands of swing boats, which did a ■very good business throughout. airs Munson, of the Club Hotel, Kaiwhara, supplied refreshments at No. 1 stand, and M*-s Onusbee was in charge at No. 2 stand. Japp’s band, in their new uniforms of dark blue cloth with yellow facings and Austrian knots, were present, and played a good selection of muaio during the day. The Scotch pipers, who had marched up from Tborndon in the morning, by way of the principal streets, also played for the dances, reels, &c,, Mr George Robertson being the principal piper. The sports were watched with much interest by a large number of spectators, it being computed that altogether about 5000 people were present during the afternoon. Wu append the lesults
