(PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, November 25. The examination in the subject of music, under the auspices of the Auckland University College, for the medals kindly presented by the Countess of Onslow, was began to-day, and is to be concluded tomorrow. The directors of the New Zealand Institute having asked the Council of the Auckland branch to nominate some one, not a resident in the Colony, as an honorary member, the branch have recommended Mr Geo. Lincoln Goodall, Professor of Natural History at Harvard University and Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Auckland Liberal Association have passed a motion affirming the opinion that the new system of taxation is calculated to encourage the growth and introduction of capital, and to promote and foster industrial enterprise. Wanganui, November 25. In the District Court to-day Augustus Ironmonger was tried on two charges of obtaining money under false pretences. The accused was formerly in the employ of G. Mcßride, of Auckland, whose servioo he left on December 24th last. A few months since a farmer in Waverloy paid him £3 on account of a bill owing to Mcßride, and accused never forwarded the money, but as he did not himself ask for it but merely received it when offered, the Judge decided that there was no evidence to go to the jury and the accused was acquitted. In the second charge he had received 16s for a bill of 17s 6d also without having asked for the money, but as he had made a reduction and thereby tacitly represented himself as acting tor Mcßride, the case was left with the jury, who returned a verdict of not guilty, and the prisoner waß discharged. Christchurch, November 25. The election of representatives for the
Charitable Aid and Hospital Boards resulted in the election of the old members, with two exceptions. Councillors Wood and Smith were the newly-returned. Dunedin, November 25. The Hon Mr Seddon this morning met a deputation of commercial men, and explained the intentions and desires of the Government concerning the representation of Now Zealand at the Chicago Exhibition. It was resolved “ that in the opinion of this meeting it would be of great benefit to the Colony that its natural produce especially should bo represented at the Chicago World’s Fair.” The matter now stands remitted back to the Chamber of Commerce to coosult other bodies. The City Council to-night decided to join with the Auckland Council in objecting to the proposal to let the right of advertising on telegraph and telephone poles. Greymouth, November 25. Influenza has been rather prevalent lately. The latest victim is Major Keddeli, R.M., who ha 3 been confined to his bed for several days, and is still nnable to get about. Mr J. McCarthy was unanimously elected Chairman of tbe Grey County to-day. --,' The County Council in the last twelve months has reduced its liabilities, by retrenchment, £IBOO. The new Chairman, Mr McCarthy, announced that he would pursue the same policy during the incoming year. Gisborne, November 25. L. E. Prichard, chemist, is bankrupt. Hi 3 assets are £707, and liabilities £IOO9. Kempthorne, Prosser and Co. are set down a 3 creditors for £4OO ; Sharland and Co., Auckland, £2B ; Margaret Tylee, Napier, £SO ; J. H. Weston, £35; Rodgers’ executors, £4O. Invercargill, November 25. The Postmaster-General left for the North to-day.
