MANAWATU NEWS.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Palmerston North, October 9. A young lady, who is at present on a visit to Mr Thos, Manson, who resides near Stoney Creek, had an awkward fall from her horse yesterday forenoon, but fortunately escaped without any injury beyond a severe shaking. The horse, »n turning the corner of The Square at the Bank of Australasia, from some unexplained causo, slipped and fell on its side, with the result that the rider, Mias Ryan, was thrown to the ground. The ease of West v. Abrahams, an action to have penalties enforced for sitting as one of the Licensing Committee while legally incapacitated, was heard yesterday before Mr Brabant, R.M. Mr Scott. Smith appeared for plaintiff, aud Mr J. Herbert Hawkins for defendant. The case was argned at considerable length, Mr Scott-Smith endeavouring to show that Mr Abrahams is beneficially interested in the Empire Hotel, to whioh a new license was granted at the June sitting of the Bench. Judgment was given for defendant, with costs against the plaintiff. Passengers by the train arriving from Foxton this forenoon observed, when near Awapuni, an accident which appeared to be of a somewhat serious character. A horse, startled by the train, bang back and dragged from his saddle the horseman by whom it was being led, who fell heavily, and seemed to be suffering severely. No further information has yet co re to hand. The inquest, wbinh was to have beon held to day, concerning the late disastrous fire, ha 3 been postponed until Monday next. Mr Lowe, engineer-in-chief, and Mr Hawkey, Government engineer for the district, were conveyed by special train at midday to-day to make an inspection of the Ashurat-YVoodville section. The statement of assets and liabilities in the estate of Mr John Allan, storekeeper, Longbnrn, shows a surplus of £326 10s lid. The weather, which Bince Tuesday afternoon, has been stormy and cold, with heavy rain, is to-day much finer, and appears to be settled, the barometer 30‘2 (rising).
