THE WANGANUI MURDER TRIAL.

VERDICT OF NOT GUILTY. (PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wanganui, October 9. Caroline Peyman’s examination was continued this morning. Accused wavered somewhat in cross-examination, but her atatemeat was not broken down. Emily F. Galbraith aud Robert A. Campbell also gave evidence. It was shown by Galbraith that deceased had no money of her own with which to pay the £5 which she Btated in her deposition she had paid Mrs Peyman for the operation. In his address to the jury, Mr Hogg for the defence dwelt upon tho fact of the evident untruth in the dying declaration a 3 to the £5, and one untruth he contended invalidated tho whole of deceased’s statement. He also dwelt upon the fact that the statement did not say an instrument was used by accused, but only “something,” and urged that tho instrument was used by the deceased. Mr Fitzherbert, for tho Crown, addressed tho jury, relying ohiefly upon the improbability of the statement of accused, and the incompatibility of her conduct. Tho Judge summed up, If anything, slightly against the accused, occupying vj hours with his speech. The jury retired at 595 p.m., and returned at 9.20 p.m. with a verdict of “not guilty.” The prisoner was accordingly discharged. Ihore waß a sensation in Court when tho verdict was announced.
