(PRE33 ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, October S. The Technical Classes’ Association brought their session to :v close to-night by a conversazione ai'id exhibition of work, scientific apparatus,"models, -See. Speeches were given by Mr A. B irt (president), Sir Robort Stout, Mr Pinkerton, M. H. R., and Mr James Allen. The Garrison HalJ \vas crowded for the occasion. Tho exhibition is to bo kept open for another two days. Dunedin, October 9. A final meeting of shareholders iu tho New Zealand Exhibition Company was held to day, when the liquidator’s statement of accounts was adopted. As it was thought the hooks and papers would iu future years prove au interesting record, it was decided to preserve thorn iu the University Library, and to hand ovor at tho end of three months any surplus that might remain of the £3O at present in hand to meat the claims of share, holders who havP not applied for their dividend, and to the Reserves Conservation Society. Dunedin, October 11. The Bureau of Industries has received applications from 320 persons for employment on the Otago Central Railway works. This number may be assumed to be in excess of the unemployed, as applications have been received from settlers about Middlomaroh : and also from thoso at present in employment temporarily who are desirous of exchanging it for work of longer duration. At the City Court to day Mary Brown was charged with illtreating her step daughter nine years old- Medical evidence was givon, Bhowing that the child was covered with bruises. Tho evidence of the family showed that no unnecessary chastisement had been administered, an l that the wet dress in which the girl went to school she put on of her own accord. The case was dismissed, the Bench cautioning the accuse d to treat the child with care owing to its weakly constitution. Dunedin, October 12. At the Police Court to-day, Geo. Bowden was committed for trial for breaking into the dwelling of Henry Essex. Edward Martin was committed for trial for breaking into a railway shed. Dunedin, October 13. Diphtheria has made it-i appearance in South Dunedin aud two deaths are reported. TIM-tRU. October 9. Timaru has sustained a loss by the death of Thomas O’Drisooll, proprietor of the Hibernian Hotel. He was highly respected, and noted for his charitable disposition. He was a member of tho Roman Catholic Church, and one of its chief supporters here. His only daughter died in Sydney a fa_w weeks since, and her 1033 preyed on his mind, and a painful and fatal illness supervened. Timaru, October 11. This afternoon the Right Rev Dr Grimes, Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, laid the foundation stone of a residence for the Marist Brothers, four of whom take charge of the parish school. His Lordship spoke briefly, promising to speak more fully in tho evening on the determination of Catholics to provide their children, not merely with instruction, but education. The present ceremony was a practical protest against tbe materialistic, godless, and selfseeking tcudancies of tho oentury, and a proof of tho Cutholios’ recognition of their duties to children and sooiety. Upwards of 2000 were present, aud £l5O was collec.ed on tbe ground. Gisborne, October 9. A six-roomed house which is being erected for Mr Joyce, and which would have bean ont of the builder’s bauds in a few days, was destroyed by fire early this morning. The origin of the fire is a mystery. Tha contractor, Mr Robb, has an insurance of £250 in tbe Standard office, Auckland, October S. After having been refitted, tho Harbour Board dredger left the harbour this afternoon on her voyage to Melbourne. The Committee of the Auckland Rowing Association, in their annual report, state that the season has been very successful. There is a small credit balance. Auckland, October 9. Amongst the through passengers for San Francisao is tho pugilist Johu L. Sullivan, who is returning from his Australian tour. The two men Atkina and Dalton, who were charged with the theft of jewellery at Devonpo-'t, valued at £45, havo been committed for trial. Auckland,October 10. The outward San Franci oo mail steamer leaving this afternoon takes specie to the value of £235,000, which is from Sydney. The member for the Bay of Islands, Mr RM. Houston, was entertained at a bauquet by a number of his supporters on Friday evening. In replying to the toast of bis health he reviewed the late session. The sum of £sl 14s, the profits from Mr Cox’s lecture in Auckland on behalf of the Irish evioted tenants, was sent to-day by the committee to Mr John Dillon. Auckland, October 12. Inspector Broham has received information from Wangarei that Mr Bishop, R.M , on Saturday dealt with the Poioti still case. Underhill was fined £IOO or 12 months’ imprisonment, and the distilling plant was eonfisoated. , The Rev Mr Sprott, of Si Barnabas Church, Mount Eden, has under consideration ' the offer of the incumbency of the Cathedral parish of St Paul’s Wellington. Auckland, October 13. The Auckland representatives at the ensuing shooting competitions in Australia left for Sydney to-day by the Talune. They are’ Private McCarthy, Victoria Rifles ; Captain Tobin, Royal Irish Rifles ; Corporal Hazard, A Battery of Artillery ; Corporal Webster, A Battery of Artillery. Feilding, October 10. Fire was discovered this morning among some woolpacks in Cobbe and Darragh s new brick store now in course of erection. It was promptly extinguished, but must have been burning for at least twelve hours , before discovery.
Feilding, October 13. It was decided at a meeting of residents last night to entertain at a banquet, and make a presentation to Mr Peter Bartholomew., one of the first settlers in the Manchester Block, who leaves shortly to reside at Levin. Christchurch, October 10. Tho annual meeting of the directors of the Kaiapoi Woollen Company took, place today. A dividend of S par cent was declared. Tho wages paid by the Company during the year amounts to £33,350. The Boys’ High School sports were held yesterday, and were well attended. The rfouior Challenge Cup was won by S. Nixon (ia.t year’s winner), with 46 points. Tha Junior Challouge Cup was won by B. Callaghan. Tho Old Boys’ Race, 200 yards, was won by P. Wood from scratch. D. Matson, winner of Christ’s College Old Boys’ Race, was second, with two yards handicap. Christcuorch, October 12. Mr J. R. Cox, M.P. for Clare, addressed au audience of about 430 iu the Oddfellows’ Hall to-night on the Irish evictions. Tho Mayor presided. The collection on behalf of evicted tenants realised about £3O. Ha will not deliver further lectures in this Colony. Christchurch, October 13. The first annual meeting of the Canterbury Athletic Club’s Protection Association was held to-night. Tiventy-one eiabs are affiliated, and it was reportsd that its work had been successful 1 in preventing men from becoming defaulters. It was decided to communicate with other centres and en. deavour to have associations started there. The annual meeting of the Prison Gate Mission was held to-day, Mr Justice Deuniston presiding. The sec-etary reported that daring the year 37 men and 4 women had been eared for ia the Mi-.sion Homo at a total cost of only £7O 6a S i. Invercargill, October 10. The sealing case, in which Andrew Newton was charged-with stealing £IOOO worth ot skins belonging to Joseph Hatch, occupied the Magistrate’s Court all yesterday and up to luncheon to-day, and has been adjourned till 22nd October. The defence is that Mr Hatch did not carry out the agreement to give the men 15s per skin, and further, that all skins of regulation size, to which he was entitled under the agreement, were handed him. Mr J. T. M. Fraser appears for the defence, and great interest Is taken in the proceedings. W estport, October 10. The coal expert for the week ended to-day is 3646 tons. Greymouth, October 11. The coal export for the week was 21S0 tons. Palmerston North, October 12. A bix. roomed house, occupied by a man named Boon, three miles from Palmerston, was burned down yesterday. There was no insurance.
