THE KAKANUI ENQUIRY.
FINDING OF THE COURT. (PER press association.) Dunedin, April 21. The Court of Enquiry find the Kakanui was caught in a terrible gale on 4th Januaiy, which seems to have partaken of the nature of a cyclone, and as she has been neither seen nor heard of since, in all probability she foundered during that gale, a fate that might have happened to a vessel of auy size. The evidence showed clearly that the men and women at the Macquarries on the arrival of the Kakanui were not in a destitute con. dition or suffering from want cf food, and never had been. The men undoubtedly suffered hardships from want of proper food, but were never absolutely in want The danger that doubtless prompted the benevolent act of sending the Kakanui gave them relief. The Court eudorsed with full confidence Captain Belcher’s opinion as to the way the vessel was lost.
