The New Zealand Shipping Company s cargo steamer Otarama, which sailed last week for London and Rio, took the following cargo from Wellington : —7225 carcases mutton, 50 lambs, 50 pieces beef, 1004 legs mutton, 282 cases cheese, 1 case fruit, 134 cases preserved meats, 337 kegs butter, 170 bales flax, 33 bales leather and basils; for Rio—l 46 cases potatoes, 75 racks oats, and 1 keg tongues. The barque Kate Tafcham, which it will be remembered went ashore somewhere near Cloudy Bay about 20 months ago ; and was afterwards repaired here, arrived in port on Friday afternoon from Newcastle with a cargo of coal consigned to Cotterell and Co. _ She left Newcastle on the 2nd instant with light southerly winds, sighted Lord Howe s Island on the 6th, and was becalmed for a couple of days. Light easterly and north-easterly winds were then met with tiff sighting Stephens Island on Thursday at noon, when she had a fresh westerly gale. She was boarded by 1 dot Shilling and moored at the wharf during the evening. She brings 420 tons coal. The steamer Kahu arrived here on Saturday from one of her periodical trips to the Chatham Islands via Lyttelton. She left the latter piace on the Ist April, and arrived at Waitangi on the 4th, and after landing passengers and’ cargo, sailed for Teraki, arriving there on the 6th. Several other stations were visited, endowing to the heavy weather she was delayed at Pitts Island a day. _On the 12tli instant she returned to Waitangi, where several passengers embarked, and she left again the same evening. During the cruise amongst the Islands a white pine gaff. 23tt long, by about sin thick, and unpamted, was found at Teraki. At another island (Little Alangere) a portion of a Maori war canoe was picked up, whic > has been brought on to Wellington for the purpose of making enquiries about it.

THE MAORI. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s cargo steamer Alaori arrived here on Inday from London, Melbourne, Auckland, and Napier. She left London on February sth, but fogs in the Channel detained her a day. On the 12th she reached Teneriffe, and attsr replenishing her bunkers with 400 tons of coal she left again the next day. Ihe N.E. trades were picked up in 2 deg N., and the vessel crossed the line in 11 deg ~ and carried them to 27 deg S. The wind then gradually shifted to the westward, and a two days'gale, with tremendously high seas, was encountered before passing the meridian of the Cape. The easting was run down, with fresh westerly breezes on the “ great circle P rin ’ ciple, tlie steamer going as far south as pOdeg S. Melbourne was reached on March 27th, the net steaming time from London being 48 days. After discharging 2COO tons of mixed cargo she left on the 3rd inst. for Auckland, and arrived there six days later. Left Auckland on the loth, Napier on the 15th, and arrived here at 5 am on Friday. J. Hanna. Air William Storett ; from Invercargill, Mr and Airs Warn, Master Warn, and Alessrs Blanche and family, Heath, Air J. Wallace, and Air J. Vallance. ARRIVAL OF THE RUAPEHU. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s R. Ruapehu came into port at 9 am on Tuesday from London and Hobart. She was berthed at the Queen’s Wharf by 10 o’clock, and preparations were at once made for unloading. She left Plymouth at 9.10 am on the Bth March, experienced fair weather across the Bay, and arrived at Teneriffe at 7.45 am on the 13th ; landed passengers, coaled, and proceeded at 6.25 pm; had.good N.E. and light S. trades, and arrived at Capetown at 11.30 pm on the 28th, but did not communicate with the shore until next morning owing to a strong S.E. wind blowing ; moved on at 12.30 pm on the 29th, and had moderate weather with fair winds to Hobart, reaching there at 4.15 pm on Thursday last; after landing passengers, mails, and 150 tons cargo, left for Wellington and arrived as above. The health of all on board was good, and amusements, such as athletic sports, concerts, &c., helped to pass the time pleasantly. One death occurred, that of a fireman named John Alfanette, three days out from Teneriffe, of heat apoplexy. She brought the following passengers for other ports Alisses Key and Alacdonald, Alessrs Hamlin, B inks, and Aston ; second saloon Miss Alurphy, Mrs AlcSorley, Alessrs Huckle, Mor-ri-on, Inglis, and Youles ;23 steerage. There were 37 passengers landed at Hobart. The Ruapehu leaves here for Lyttelton at the end of the week, from which port she takes her final departure.
