SOUTHLAND ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Invercargill. April 13. The annual meeting of the Acclimatisation Society, held to-night, disclosed a very satisfactory state of affairs, the amount to credit on the year’s work being £64 4s Bd. The subscriptions amounted to £29 7s, fishing and coursing licenses to £l9O 10s, and sales of opossums to £62 10a 6d. The Society has assets of the value of £2194 4s Bd, and the debts due are £l4 Is lOd. During the year 129,500 trout were liberated, and 223 opossums sold at 5a each. The report expressed satisfaction at the increased number of Australian anglers who visited the district for sport this season, and regret that the destruction of fish by dynamite and lime continues unchecked, the Society having been unable to get evidence to warrant prosecution. Steps will be taken shortly by netting to ascertain whether there are any salmon in the Aparima, iu which river large numbers were liberated two years ago, and which have frequently been reported to have been seen in shoals.
