London, April 11. Mr H. H. Gibbs, of Antony, Gibbs, and Sons, merchants, will contest the City of London seat in the House of Commons vacated by the death of Mr Thomas Charles Baring. (PER press association.) Sydney, April 9. Sir J. Thurston, Governor of Fiji, has arrived on a visit to Melbourne. Mr Pound, who was connected with the Mount Otway platinum frauds, is insolvent. His liabilities are L 137,000, and assets L 112,000. Since the reduction in the ocean postaged to 2ld, the correspondence with Great Britain has nearly doubled. News has been received from the Islands that the barque Pusnaes, from Melbourne, was totally wrecked on Howland Island (one of the Gilbert Group) while loading guano. The crew reached shore in safety, and were rescued by the Auckland schooner Mailes, which had to cruise about the island for ten days before the castaways could be taken off. Sydney, April 10. Sir Harry Atkinson and Captain Russell return to New Zealand by the Manapouri to-day. The Government will summon Parliament for the despatch of business at the end of May. They propose to introduce measures dealing with local government and electoral laws, and coal mines regulations.

This being the last session of the present Parliament, no attempt will be made to bring the question of Federation to a vote of the House, but it will form the main plank on which the Government will go to the country. At the Supreme Court to-day, Bradley, late manager of the Devonshire street branch of the English and Scottish Chartered Bank, was sentenced to six years’ penal servitude for embezzlement ; and Druce, another bank embezzler, received five years. The Government, in order to avoid going on the London market in the present state of things, are borrowing what they require from the New South Wales Savings Bank at 4 per cent. Sydney, April 13. A rich development of carbonate ore has been found in the South Broken Hill mine. The action, in which Mr Andrew Rowan claims L 25,000 from Mr Horsfall, as damages for alleged libel and slander, arising out of a disputs with Goldsbrough Mort, and Co.’s Directors, has been referred to arbitration. There is also a cross action, in which Mr Horsfall claims L 30,000 damages from Mr Rowan for libel. Melbourne, April 11. James Johnston, commission-agent, at Ballarat, who murdered his wife and four children in December last, has been convicted on the capital charge and sentenced to death. Melbourne, April 13. The ex-New Zealanders resident in Melbourne warmly welcomed Sir George Grey on his arri\ al in the city, and (presented him with an illuminated address. Melbourne, April 14. Floods at Cairns have drowned over live hundred cattle and two hundred horses. It is not at present known whether any human lives have been lost. Adelaide, April 14.

The police bare made a raid on several tobacconist shops in town, where it was suspected gambling was being carried on, and have arrested 35 persons.
