(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Stratford, March 18. The Caledonian Sports here yesterday were a great success. Nearly one thousand people were on the ground. The weather was all that could be desired. L. Broad, the scratch man, won the Mile rather easily, but most of the events were very closely contested. There was a very exciting finish in the 220yds, won by about six inches by J. Minninix, Taylor and Putt being a dead heat for second place. Putt won the Maiden, Carrington being second. For the 100yds, Taylor, syds, was first; Putt, 6yds, second ; J. Minninix, 6yds, third. The Stratford Handicap—C. Clark, Byds, 1; T. Taylor, 29yds, 2 ; S. Minninix, scratch, 3. County Handicap—McKenzie, 19yds, 1 ; Goodwin, 22yds, 2; Coleman, 22yds, 3. The 220yds hurdle race was won by Taylor. Sifflet being second. Pearson was leading, but fell at the last hurdle. Dunedin, March 18.
The Hospital Trustees decided to oali for tenders for a Nurses’ Home, and with city members they will wait on the Minister of Lands to morrow to urge their claims to a special vote for building a new hospital. The President of the Building Trades Union has received a reply from the Hon W. P. Reeves for the Minister of Public Works, intimating that as desired contracts so far as practicable shall be so arranged as to distribute the work as widely as possible among the trades interested in building construction. The City Council to-night censuved the Superintendent of the Fire Brigade for not making better arrangements for giving an alarm of fire on the occasion of the Kakanui fund fete, when, owing to the absence of the brigade, property was destroyed in George street. Invercargill, March 18. John Gibson Smith, one of the earliest teachers in this district, formerly seoietary and lately treasurer to the Education Board, died to night, aged 76. Auckland, March IS.
The American ship Leading Wind, which was scuttled here lately, sold at auction to-day to Captain ,£>. Savory for £2150. An address to be presented to Pastor Birch, late of the Baptist Tabernacle, is re. ceiving numerous signatures. Nelson, March 18. The Hon Mr Seddon left for the West Coast this afternoon by the s.s. Brnnner, the Mawhera being detained here fitting new blades to her propeller, some having been stripped off. Mr Seddon declares his intention to relieve miners from the necessity of attending the Warden’s Courts on formal applications unless notice is given that opposition is to be offered. It is stated that some redactions in the Land Office here are to be made. Westport, March 18. Eight informations laid by Mr Jackman against the local brewer, Mr J- Williams, are set down for hearing on Monday next. The Hon R. Seddon, Minister of Mines, will arrive here to morrow by the Brunner from Nelson. A banquet will be tendered him on Friday. The Minister leaves for Reefton on Saturday morning. Blenheim, March 18. The St. Patrick’s Day sports were largely attended yesterday. The St. Patrick’s Handicap of three events, 100, 220, and 440 yards, was won by Aroa, of Marlborough, with eleven points, with Honnor second, and McKinley third. The Mile was won by Dodson (85yds) in 4min 47sec. The Half, mile was won by Swan (scratob) in 2min 9sec.
