THORNDON RECREATION GROUND.
Sir, —I notice that Mr Anderson’s motion for particulars of the revenue collected for recreation purposes, and of the locality of expenditure thereof, was rejected by the Council on Thursday night, Councillor Moeller observing that to grant the information might load to illfeeling between the various Wards. Tho position is identical with that of four brothers who have placed partnership moneys in a till. The three younger brothers help themselves freely, but when the eldest thinks he would like to spend some himself, lie finds the drawer empty. On big brother Andy wanting to know what the other three did with the cash, little boy Frankie tells him that such cruel questioning will occasion ill-feeling among the brothers. Little Frankie may be very certain that greater ill feeling will be created if the three culprits refuse Andy and his family the simple satisfaction of knowing what has been done with their share of the money. Does it not show what a poor case the Council generally has for refusing Thorndon a recreation ground, when it is afraid to let it be known how and where the town belt lease rents have been spent j though the said rents belong to Thorndon equally with the other wards, yet no portion has been spent there.- In commenting on my previous letter you said that if certain objection pointed out by you could be overcome you would support the Thorndon movement. Mr Ballance in his speech to the deputation of the 6th seems to have cleared the way, and he deserves the thanks of every Thorndon resident for the position he has taken. I hope therefore that you will give us your assistance to obtain our just rights, a recreation ground for Thorndon.—l am, &c., Alfred Boardman.
