FIRES.
The fire bell rang out an alarm on Tuesday, but fortunately there was no necessity for the brigade’s services, as the conflagration wan caused by some rubbish on a section in Oriental Bay.

At 1 a.m. to-day the Canterbury Grass Seed Cleaning Company’s works, Norwich quay, were destroyed by fire. Ihe stores were full, and men were working day and night shifts. It is presumed the fire originated in the engine-house. A strong northwest wind was blowing at the time, and Parson’s premises adjoining were saved. The firm’s carter was asleep on the premises, and had a narrow escape. He was awakened by the crackling of wood. Insurance—On the stock, £3250 in the Victoria and Sun offices ; plant, £3OO in the Liverpool, London and Globe, valued at £900.. There were 700 bags of seed ready for shipment. Invercargill, March 5.
A six-roomed house, owned by James Pomeroy, was destroyed by fire through a defective chimney. The building was insured for £125 in the National, and the furniture for £SO in the Equitable. The loss is estimated at £2CO above insurance. Nothing was saved. Auckland, March 5.
A nine-roomed house at Paeroa, owned and occupied by Samuel Charlton, was burned this morning. The building was insured for £250 in the Norwich Union office.
