THE CANADIAN AGITATION.
(per press association. ) Ottawa, February 25. The Hon. C. H. Tupper, Minister of Marine, accuses Sir Richard Cartwright, and the Hons. Wilfred Laurier and Wimaun, members of the Dominion Parliament, Mr Robert R. Hitt, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the United States House of Representatives, and other members of the American Congress, of plotting for the annexation of Canada to the United States. Ottawa, February 27. The Hon Wilfrid Laurier, leader of the Liberal Party in the Dominion Parliament, and two other Liberals, have been returned unopposed. Ottawa, February 28. Mr Wimann, one of the leaders of the Liberal Party, has obtained written pledges from over seventy members of the American House of Representatives in support of Mr R. H, Hitt’s motion in
Congress for reciprocity between Canada and the United States. The Liberals are using the pledges for electioneering purposes. Sir J. Macdonald is seriously ill Washington, February 28. An inspired article in the Post, a Democratic paper, this morning declares that Americans regard the issue of the elections in Canada with sheer indifference beyond expressing sympathy with the Liberals, and states that the political union of the two countries must wait. (special to press association.) Ottawa, February 25. Sir R. Cartwright denounces the charges of treason against him as impudent calumnies.
