SCHOOL INSPECTION.

THE ANNUAL REPORT. From the annual report of Mr Lee, the Inspeotor of Schools, it appears that the total attendance in all schools in 1889 was 10,460, and in 189010,694, being an increase of 234. The total of the standard passes in 1889 was 5985, and in 1890 6435, an increase of 453. Out of 7687 children who were expected to be present for standard examination, only 217 were absent, or one in 35. The infant department of schools have been carefully examined, and the work in reading is much improved, especially in the City infant schools. With the exception of the Mount Cook Infant School the departments are deficient in Kindergarten occupations. In order to make school life less wearisome it has been proposed to make the following alterations That more time be given to the teaching of elementary science. In the lower classes ' ‘ obverservatiou lessons” to be taught by actual experiment and illustration. That Longman’s Fairy Tale Books and other works ot interest be read to young children, and stirring passages from history to the upper classes. Amongst other suggestions, the Inspector suggests that the arithmetic of one or two standards should be a little easier. The report concludes as follows :—“ We are now about to furnish schools with the means of carrying out these resolutions which I am sure will meet with general approval, and which I doubt not will in time lead to a more wholesome, a more intellectual and a lighter-hearted school life.
