If Mr D. O’Brien has not got another Carbine in his stables he evidently possesses in Freedom a three-year.old colt of exceptional quality. In the Otago Cup last week he got 151 b from the New Zealand Cup winner, Wolverine, and won a good race by a neck ; but in the President’s Handicap he only received 51b from Wolverine and beat him pretty badly. Apparently a mile and a half is his distance, and over that course he is a very fast customer. In Florrie, a daughter of Rubina, by Tasman, Mr O’Brien has an exceedingly good second string,. and her victories in the Dunedin Stakes and Musselburgh Plate were both very meritorious ones. Indeed Mr O’Brien had a great deal the best of the meeting altogether. St Andrew proved himself a rattling good colt, especially over short distances ; and the Heatherbell, who is by Daniel O’Rourke from Fairy Bell (a mare of Mr T. Redwood’s breeding) seems . to have affected the surprise of the meeting by winning the Spring Handioap. The surprize of the meeting on the other hand, would be to many people the wretched form shown by the Spy in the hurdle races. With list 31b up he could only get third to Waitangi ; with the same weight unplaced in the Tally Ho Handioap, one and a half miles which Ixion won in 3min 2seo; and with 10st 71b in the last Hurdles Ixion gave him a stone weight and a bad beating. How the mighty are fallen 1 The Spy is considered a very fast horse on the flat, and if he were well, and all other conditions favorable, he must have none far better. Still it is to be remembered that he has been travelled about a good deal lately, and may have got Btale. Maid of Honor, Freedom’s dam, is mother of Precedence, the Musket mare who has recently showed very good form in Australia. Melos 9st 71b heads the list of weights for the A. J.C. summer Cup, a mile and a half, to be run at Sydney in Christmas week. Teksnm was given Sst 10lb, whereupon his owner scratched him. Leopold has Bst 21b, Gatling 7st 121 b, and Dolosa 6st 10. One would have thought that after his running in the Melbourne Cap Highborn would have got a higher impost in this race than 7st 121 b. Dolosa by Leolinus—Lure, carried 7st 21b to victory in the Handicap of 100 sovs. a mile, at Warwick Farm races the other day. * Phaeton ’ reports that up to the present this season 34 of th 9 mares at Sylvia Park have foaled, the result being 19 colts and 15 Allies. The foalings .announced this week are Crinoline dam of Clogs), colt to Ncrdenfeldt; Atlantis (dam of Leolantis), colt to Ingomar; Lyre (late Lyric) colt by Ingomar. As there is no stallion at Sylvia Park suitable for Happy Land, who is a daughter of Musket from Atlantis, she is to mated with Nelson. Martin Loughlin, of Ballarat, who is not a bad sort of fellow (for a millionaire), in a general way (says Bohemia), showed an annoyance which is only justifiable in a millionaire at Williamstown on Monday week His ’oss Don Giovan won the Williams, town Cup, and Loughlin was wild because he had won only £BOO when he should have won £BOOO. Tis said that so vexed was his soul at winning only a paltry £BOO that he at once took the horse away from the trainer’s charge. This is indeed a change from working a ‘ wet face ’ as an alluvial miner at two guineas a week. The owner of Ringmaster has refused £3OOO for the horse. Messrs E. De Mestre and John Tait have won four Melbourne Caps a piece, and Messrs J. White and D. S. Wallace are each credited with half that number. No other successful owner has won more than one. Bob Ramage received £2OOO for his share in Carbine’s Melbourne Cap victory, but what Hickenbotham, the trainer, was presented with, deponent would not like to say just now. Niagara, who has had a season at the stud in Australia, is to be put in work again. Writing of the sale of the late W. White’s horses at Newmarket, the London Sportsman says :— ‘ For Kirkham, who alone of thesehas carried silk, Capt. Macbell gave Seemingly a reasonable price, his appearance and running last spring taken into consideration, whilst the more stalwart Narellan looks at all events one of the sort likely to make a usefal hurdle racer. Mr D. Cooper, however, bought the more valuable for 4650 guineas, a magnificent filly named Mons Meg, to whom I had previously called pointed attention, contri bating over half that sum, and if anything like so good as she is said to be, this daughter of MartiniHenry, almost a perfect type of the well ribbed-up, powerful two-year-old, may not prove a costly purchase. Full of quality for her stamp, she presented a marked contrast to the coarse looking Wentworth, who, however, is not without good points, whilst the yearling Martini-Henry from Kirkham’s dam, which Mr Douglas Baird purchased, is quite a prodigy as to size, and stands on grand limbs. It should have been mentioned that Robert Sherwood entered the strongest opposition to Mr Cooper for the possession of Mons Meg.’ It is rumored that The Spy is to be taken to Australia shortly. The catalogue of Sylvia Park stock to be sold at Auckland on the third of January next represents probably the best stad ever got together in the Southern Hemisphere for sale. The stallions to be offered are Nordenfeldt, St Ledger, Hotchkiss and Fusilade; and among the mares are Mersey (dam of Carbine), Sylvia (dam of Martini-Henry), Onyx (dam of Nordenfeldt), My Idea (dam of Nelson), Nelly Moore (dam of Loohiel), —Florence Macarthy (dam of Tirailleur),
Tres Bence (dam of Mantoa), Pearl Ash, Steffe, Lonebird, Orient and Ericyna. There are also twenty-four yearlings, all the very perfection, cf fashionable breeding. The sale is sure to attract the principal breeders and horsemen of the Australasian colonies. GREYMOUTH WEIGHTS. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Greymouth, November 27. A good start was effected. Prime Warden led for a little, and was joined by St. Malo, the pair going at a merry pace, Freedom lying next, with the rest in a bunch on his heels. The leading pair swept into the straight with three lengths lead, and passing the stand Prime Warden led St. Malo by a length, Freedom, going strongly two lengths away, third, with Oocident and Wolverine next. Rounding the windmill corner the field commenced to close up. Freedom and St. Malo were prominent as they entered the straight.
