FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITION.
The Fire Brigade tournament, in which a number of teams from the local Brigade took part, was held on Jervois quay on Monday. The competitions were watched with considerable interest by a goodly number of spectators. The principal piize, a gold and silver shield, was won by Foreman Wool, cott’a team, who scored 6 points, Foreman Lawrence’s team being second, with 5 points, and Branchman Parsonage’s third, with 4 points. The winning team did their work very well. Captain Kemsley superintended the competitions, and the other officers were as follow Judges—Councillors L. L. Harris and C. P. Worth ; Referee—Councillor J. B. Haroourt ; Timekeepers Messrs J. Doyle and W. Coltman ; and Starter, Mr C. Tandy.
Following are the results of the oompetitions : Hose Reel Fiat Event.—Seven men to run 10yds, pick up reel, run 100yds to fireplug, uncover plug, fix hydrant, lay out 100 ft hose, fix branch, show water, take off branch, put in dividing breeching, lay out two 50ft lengths hose, fix two branches, and show water. Lieut. Adams’ team (Hydrantman Hoar, Firemen Brannigan, McVicar, W. Jenkins, Farmer, and McGillivray), 49 2-sth sec ... ... ... ’ ... 1 Foreman Woolcott’s team (Branchman Payne, Firemen M. Kennedy, P. Kennedy, T. McWhinney, J. Lepper, and Assistant-Branchman D. Howard), I 55sec. .. ... 2 Branchman Parsonage’s team (Branchman S. Webb. Assistant.Branchmen Williams and Taylor, Hydrantman J. I Jenkins, Firemen Baylis and H. Councillor L.L. Harris (Chairman of 1 the Fire Brigade Committee) occupied the 1 jhair, and he was supported by Councillors 1 J. F, Worth and J. B. Haroourt- The vice j 3hair was occupied by Lieut. J. F. Adams, j who was supported by Foremen J. Law- - renoe and H. S. Wooloott. of the champion shield), and other visitors j were also present. An apology yras read I from ex-Foreman Wilson, who was'unable to be present through illness. The following toaßts were duly honoured: “The Queen and the Royal Family,” and “His ExcelI lenoy the Governor,” proposed by the Chair, maa; “ The City Council and the Fire Brigade Committee ” (which was received with cheers) waß proposed by Mr R. M. Simpson and responded to by Councillor J. b! Hsrconrt; “ The Fire Brigade Committee,” proposed by Captain Kemsley, Councillor L. L. Harris responding; “The Insurance Companies,” proposed by Captain Kemsley, I H; M. Simpson responding ; 11 The j Municipal Fire Brigade,’ proposed byMrF. G. Thompson, Captain Kemsley responding “The Prize-givers” (which was well receive!), proposed by Captain Kemsley, and responded to by Mr S. Kohn ; “Judges and Referee,” proposed by Lieutenant J. F. Adams, Councillor C. F. Worth responding- “ Timekeepers and Starter,” proposed by M.’ F. Kennedy, Mr C. Tandy responding. “The Ladies ” and “ The Press ” were also toasted. Songs and recitations were given during the evening by Lientenant Adams, Branchman White, Messrs H. Nash A Boardman, S. Webb, M. F. Kennedy, ’and G. Taylor. The catering was in the hands of Mr S. Scott. The gathering, which had been a most enjoyable one, terminated shortly before midnight with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne ” and the “ National Anthem.” With a view of showing the value of the company system introduced by Os r, taia Kemsley. a false alarm was raised during the evening,* and the company in charge of the Lambton district at once responded. On returning to the hall the company which had so promptly answered the call of duty were warmly received.
