THE S.S. TAVIUNI. The Union Company’s new steamer Taviuni, which is intended for the Fiji trade, and which recently arrived in Melbourne from Home, is built of the best mild steel throughout and her dimensions are as follow: Length, 250 f t; beam, 34ft; and depth of hold, 19ft. Her net register is 910 tons. She was built by Messrs Denny Bros., of Dumbarton. She is fitted throughout with the electric light, and has excellent passenger accommodation. Her engines are of the latest type, quadruple expansion, On the voyage out they were never eased for a minute, either for bearings or any

cause. The Argus says that tfiia reSdrtl of steaming continuously a distance of 12,4001 miles without a break, and in the comparatively quick time of 48 days 17 houra and 40 minutes, _is certainly remarkable, and has not yet been surpassed in the annals of longdistance voyaging. The speed maintained was 10£ knots, on a restricted Consumption of fuel. The cylinders are arranged tandem fashion, and their diameters are as follow .-'-s 18in, 27iin, 36in, and 53in, and the pistonstroke is 39iu. The engines are surfacecondensing and direct-acting, and are of 135 horse-power nominal. They work up, however, to 1000 horse power effective. The boiler is of steel, ovlinder-ended, and tubular, and was tested by hydratllic pressure to three times the ordinary pressure! On a consumption of 15 tons Of Coat per day she can steam 12j, knots per hour. The saloon, which is beautifully fitted up, is capable ot accommodating 42 passengers, and the second cabin 28 passengers. The Taviuni is Hush decked, and is Fchooner rigged. The ArgUs, in the course of a lengthy description of the steamer, states that as a specimen of naval architecture of the highest class the Taviuni reflects the utmost credit on the builders, and the Company is to be Congratulated on the acquisition of so fine a boat to their fleet. The steamer is in charge of Captain Elliott Taylor. The other officers are—J. Hay, chief officer; R. D. Watson and J. McOaush; J. Sinclair, chief engineer, and Messrs R. Burns, J. Alexander and Campbell; Dr J. Davidson, medical officer; J. Millar, chief steward.

THE FASTKST ON RECORD. A lengthy article might be written on the subject of fast steaming for short runs, but a report is to hand under date of London, the 15th August, which speaks for itself. It appears to have been a race between the fastest vessels afloat. The account says : —Afi ocean race from Liverpool to New York between the Teutonic and the City of New York ended on August 13 in a remarkable victory for the former vessel. r lhe Teutonic arrived over three hours ahead of her rival, beating the best record ever made by 13 minutes. The time from Queenstown to Sandy Hook was 5 days 19hrs smin. As she came up the Bay, writes a correspondent, the Teutonic was continually salutsd by passing Vessels, and received with shouts of welcome by an immense crowd which had assembled at the pier. On the first day the vessel made 473 miles, on the second 496. on the third 512, on the fourth 500, on the fifth 485, and during the 19 hours of the sixth 310. Tile first day's rim was made against a strong south-easterly breeze. The wind then shifted to the north-east, and blew strong, and the City of New York was lost sight of on the second day. During the last 45 hours the Teutonic encountered variable winds, but the weather throughout the voyage was good. Tiie average speed for the voyage Was 20175 knots.
