THE DRAINAGE PROBLEM.
Sir, —The decision to empty the drainage of Wellington into Cook Strait, instead of trying doubtful and odoriferous experiments in sewage-farming, will be hailed by most people as a step in the right direction. The chief question that remains is one of tidal currents, and from what I have seen of these it seems more than probable that a considerable portion of any sewage emptied into the strait on this side of Wellington Heads will be driven back on the coast in the shape of offensive green slime, forming a most undesirable addition to the paddling places of our children at Island and Lyell Bays. The considerable volume of fresh water emptied into Wellington harbour, and the strong set of the tide at the heads renders it more than pro bable that if the drainage were taken once and for all into deep water it would be carried right away to sea, and no evil effects result from il. The primary cost would be more, but it is surely better to incur this cost and so finally dispose of the nuisance than to run the risk of establishing an unpleasant nuisance in our suburbs which in years to come may assume dangerous proportions. I am, &c., . lodium. Wellington, September 4.
