(per press association.) Auckland, July 2. One of the artificers of the Garrison Artillery at Fort Cautley, Mr Simons, has left for Sydney, en route for England. He was presented by the members of the battery with a handsome walking stick, Christchurch, July 2. The Lyttelton Harbour Board approved the action of the Chairman in selling the dredging plant to the Government for £12,000 for the Wes;port Harbour Board. Delivery will be given up at the conclusion of the present dredging operations not later than October 15. The Chairman reported that on June 26, with a rise of tide of only 5 feet 4 iuohes, aud a bit of a sea on, the Coptic, drawing 26 feet 2 inches, left the wharf and proceeded to sea without the least difficulty or delay. u
Dunedin, July 2. At a meeting of the City Council to con. sider the balance-sheet, the Mayor stated that the overdraft exceeded the amount allowed on the general account. He suggested, as a means of putting the finances on a better footing, that a rate of 3d in the pound for charitable aid should be struck, and that the second moiety of the wator rate should not be collected. The water account showed a surplus of some £2053, but this could not be credited to the general account. The matter wa3 referred to the Finance. Committee. s Woodville, July 2. An indignation meeting has been called to protest against the action of the Railway Commissioners in removing the terminal station buildings, as it has always been part of the Publioj Works policy that Woodville should he a terminal station, and the buildings mAV being removed would have to be replaced on completion of the EketahuDa. Westport, July 2. At the Resident Magistrate s Court to day Thomas Johnston Jones was co i mitted to the District Court for an assault of grievous bodily harm on John Marshall, manager of the Westport Wallsend coalmine.
