MASTERTON NEWS.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Masterton, June 25. At the ordinary meeting last night the Borough Council decided to carry the gas mains to the railway station, and also to erect a lamp at the entrance. Mr Long, owner of the boarding hons 6 adjoining the Volunteer Drillhall, recently secured an iujunotion, issued by the Supreme Court, to prevent skating and the playing of brass instruments in the hall. The building has since been used for dancing and meetings, although not licensed by the Borough Council, their Inspector’s report not being satisfactory. Mr Long now calls on the Council to prosecute the Volunteers for defying the bylaws, but the Council last night granted a license, subject to the favourable report of a special committee, although the former resolutions cannot be rescinded until the next meeting. The question is, to who shall Mr Long prosecute, the Borough Council for not carrying out their by-laws, or the Volunteers ? In the meantime the Caledonian Society hold their ball in the hall, beiDg just the very thing it was intended, if possible, to prevent. The remains of Mr R. Wilson were to-day followed to the grave by a large number of settlers, by whom the deceased was held in great esteem.
