EDUCATION BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Education Board was held on Wednesday. Present —Messrs J. R. Blair (chairman), J. Young, H. Bunny, F. H. Fraser, A. W. Brown, Rev J. Paterson. G. Beetham, W. C. Buchanan, and Dr Newman, M.H.R.’s. Accounts amounting to L 3106 83 9iL were passed for payment. The Chairman intimated that from inspections he had made he had observed that the sanitary arrangements in two of the city schools were defective. The girl’s school in Buckle street wa3 in a disgraceful condition} and the same state of things existed at the Newtown school. He considered that these two matters should bo at once attended to. The Board resolved that the Chairman be empowered to take what action he deemed necessary. The resignation of Mr J. Willis, as headmaster of the Mangaone school, was accepted. The Board agreed that Mr Swikington’s application to remain in the services of the Board till the end of July be acceded to. Miss Roylan was appointed teacher to the Kereru School. Leave of absence was granted to teachers in the Board’s employment as follows :—Miss Miry Braithwaita, one week ; Mr G. Jones, six months ; W. J. Kirk, three months. , Mr H. C. Messiter, and also the School Committee of Gladstone, wrote asking that the period of the mid-winter holidays should be altered. The Board granted the request, providing the master did not object. A discussion took place with reference to an application from the Teachers’ Association to the effect that teachers might be given a memorandum giving a reason for dismissal from the Board’s employment. Mr Bunny spoke strongly against the granting of the request, saying it would lead to all kinds of trouble. It was ultimately agreed to let the matter stand over until the next meeting of the Board. The Masterton School Committee wrote asking the Board to recommend to the Education Department that there should be a greater uniformity in the use of class books. It was resolved to write informing the applicants that, so far as proficiency was concerned, uniformity iu class books was observed. A deputation from the Horolciwi Valley, represented by Mr Jones, waited upon the Board, asking that a shed be built in connection with the school, and also granting the erection of a chimney. The Chairman explained that the expenditure for what was asked for had, already been granted. The Board’s architect was instructed to prepare plans for making additional accommodation at Taueru school, and sundry repairs to the teacher’s residence. It was decided to sink au artesian well in the Carterton school grounds. The alterations to the Belvidere school were referred to and ordered to stand over till next meeting of the Board. A’i application w s received from the School Co nmi tee at, Ddefiaid for increased school accommodation, which was referred to a committee to report upon, consisting of Messis Beetham, Bunny, and Buchanan. The Board sanctioned the expenditure for alterations to the school at Levin and Ponrua, and the erec-ion of shelter sheds at Vogoltown.
