SPORTING TOPICS.

(By Martini.)

Entries for the great C.J.C. event, the Challenge Stakea of 2000 sovs for 2,3, and 4-year-olds, to be run in 1893, w.f.a., with winning penalties, will be due on Friday, August 1, at 4 pm, for two-year-olds and yearlings ; and on the 6th of February for foals of 1890. Particulars of this important event will be found advertised elsewhere.

The South Manchester and West London Lacrosse Clubs contended for the championship of England last month, with the result that the former won by 15 goals to 8. ‘ Hippona ’ discourses thus on the two-year-olds at Auckland :—At Ellerslie there are six. Harry Harrison has in hand Major George’s pair of colts, The Workman (by Robinson Crusoe —The Maid), and iEgyptus (by First King—Memphis). A big upstanding colt by Captivator—Madcap, belonging to Mr \T. Bojbbett, is in George Hope’s stable, and J. B. Williamson has a trio under his care, viz., Orestes (by Nordenfeldt —Clytemnestra), aco!t by Sword Dance Elphin (the dam of Strephon), and a‘ colt by Captivator—Maid of Honour (full brother to Mr D. O’Brien's colt Freedom), taken from Sylvia Park this week. This, completes, the Ellerslie lot, but at Kohimarama Harry Howe has broken in Tulloch (by Sword Darice—Dundee’s Katie), and Brigand (by Brigadier—Gannet); and The Dancer (by Sword Dance—Vivandiere), is to be taken in hand on George Wright’s arrival from Sydney. In the Mangere district are a quartette, J. Fletcher having in his stable Hercules (by Leolinus—Lady Ravensworth) and Transit (by Hippocampus—Venus Transit), while at Mr J. Lennard’s, Huxtable is looking after a filly by Hippocampus—Rosarina, and a filly by King Cole—Brassalis. At the North Shore, Mr R. Burke has had broken-in and handled Lady Belle (by Brigadier—Belle) and j Bombardier (by Brigadier—Kate); while Mr ! B. Thompson’s colt by Foul Shot—Mystery, who lately met with a slight mishap, is about to be taken in hand.

An optician has (aecording to a recent London paper) invented a most ingenious arrangement for making faint-hearted horses try to win races. Many animals—of which old Despair was a notable instance—can gallop splendidly, but directly they get in front of their competitors, curl up, and refuse to try another yard. The invention referred to is simply a large pair of spectacles, upon the glass of which is painted the picture of a horse galloping. Its effect is said to be marvellous —indeed, one gentleman who tried it on a stubborn horse could not stop the animal until it had taken him through a shop window.

Fred Hedge, the well-known steeplechase rider, is reported to have come into a fortune of £II,OOO by the death of an uncle. The sensational horse Tradition was sold to Mr Phillip Heywood for 900 guineas in Melbourne recently. Mr T. Hedge, who has returned to Auckland, informs 'Phaeton’ that Hilda and Antelope were far from well when they ran at the Sydney Turf Club. Meeting. Messenger, the Auckland horse, rah unplaced in the Hurdles and Steeplechase at Moonee Valley on the 7th inst. Satan, another New Zealander, won the Steeplechase. At Sydney Rossiter ran third, and Recruit and Melrose fell in a steeplechase. It is rumoured that Mr J. B. Gill, the defendant in the Moorebank libel case, will apply for a rehearing. In addition to the verdict of £5, it was estimated that the costs would run up to nearly £BOO. The lawyers make about £IOOO out of the case.

The owner of Fishwife, a mare, who has done some tremendous things over short distances in Australia, is so disgusted with her treatment by the handicappers th,;t he has decided to send her to the paddock; and she will be mated with Mentor. Apparently Sullivan and Jackson are not to fight until September, for I see by exchanges that the Californian Athletic Club has put up £4OOO for them to box to a finish for in that month. Jackson is reported to have been taking a good deal of liquid refreshment lately. Mine Wallace and George Dixon (coloured), the bantam-weight champions of England and America, are to box for £SOO in London.

Young Mitchell, who was out in Australia a couple of years ago, was to fight La Blanche (Dempsey’s conqueror), .at San Franciscp, on the 23rd of June, and Dempsey was expected to challenge the winner. Slavin and McAuliffe fight for £SOO in October.

On the 11th of June the Sportsman’s correspondent telegraphed from Sydney : : —‘ A sensational story is published to-day to the effect that William O’Connor, the American champion, did a trial over the champion course on Saturday morning by moonlight, when he covered the distance in 19min 30sec, which is, if correct, the fastest on record by a lot. This may, however, be taken with a big grain of salt. T 1 e Canadian has been tried lately without doubt, and though his public form is disliked, there can be no question but that he will be much harder to beat than most people imagine. Before M'Lean. was beaten by Kemp, the former’s backers said he could do the journey in 18 minutes, but he did not get near it. At present there is no betting on the coming race, but if the stranger has rewed up to expectation speculation may be looked for shortly.’

The following New Zealand horses are entered for the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdle Bace, to be run on the 12th of July :—Waitangi, Messenger, The Artist, Satan, Waiter, Posaiter, Peter Osbeck, Mangaohane and Titokowaru. The V.B.C. handicapper has evidently made up his nJind that Carbine at lOst had too great a show in the Melbourne Cup last year, and so for the coming event he has given the horse lOst 51b, rating Mjg||j|who attempted to rival him laßt year, 12$7?ower, and putting Lochiel —rather unjustly, seeing that the horse has had a long spell away from the racing track—on the mark with Melos. Tirailleur is honoured in being bracketed with Dreadnought, and Merrie England, on his recent form, is not so badly handicapped at 9st 31b, as Maaton is at 9st 21b, and Cuirassier at 9st. Sultan, Sat 111 b, is also well treated, Nearly all the

other New Zealand entrants may be considered as handicapped leniently enough, and Pygmalion, 7at 7ib ; Medallion, 7st 51b (a doubtful opinion on the relative merits of the two colts); and Gatling 7st 51b, form a formidable trio, so that with Sultan, Merrie England and Tirailleur to also represent us, this Colony will have a good deal to say in the race. A peculiarity of the handicap is the weight at which Titan is handicapped. One would have thought that the champion two-year-old of Australia would have been reckoned more than 41b or 61b better than Pygmalion and Medallion ! By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (per press association.) London, June 18. There were 24 starters in the Boyai Hunt Cup at Ascot. Lady Betty, who was third favourite, came in ninth, and Ringmaster tenth. London, June 19. The principal event at Ascot to-day—the Gold Cup, resulted as follows : Prince Soltykoff’s ch h Gold, by Sterling —Lncetta, 4yrs ... ... ... 1 Colonel North’sjb m Philomel, by Philammon—Chrysalis, syrs... ... ... 2 Mr M.
