A Pretty Story.
Following is the story of the granting of the Ldgion d’Honneur to Rosa B<>nheur as told by M. Peyrol in the Art Journal. Fontainbleau was one of the favourite summer residences of Napolean 111, and one day the Empress thought she would like to make the artist’s personal acquaintance. With that eud in view she oaid an impromptu call, and staid some time watching Rosa Bonheur at work. She was so impressed by the painter’» talent that she begged the Emperor to bestow the Cross of the Legion of Honour upon her. But it was not to be. The cross had never been given to a woman, and the Ministers protested against a precedent. But the Empress bided her time till the following year when, during the absence of the Emperor in Algeria, she actod as regent. One morning a servant hurriedly entered Rosa Bonheur s studio with the announcement that the Em press was below. In another minute she was in the studio borrowing a pin from one of her ladies. The Empress then kissed the artist, who, glancing down, saw tue Ldgion d Hooneur pinned on her breast.
