PALMERSTON NORTH.
(from our own correspondent.) May 15. Excellent progress is being made by the contractors (Messrs Forest and McGee) in carrying out the borough sewage works. The heaviest part of the contract, viz., that portion extending from the outlet to the Fitzherbert road, is nearly completed, and well within the time stipulated the principal streets will be connected with the new drainage system. Councillor Edwards deserves great credit for this scheme, which, if not absolutely perfect, will yet be of immense benefit to the' town, the fall to the river loeipg fairly above the limit fixed by engineering experts, and the whole plan haying been approved by Mr Nicholas IVfarchant, C.E., than whom there is perhaps no better authority on such matters ip the Colony. The weather for the last few days has been much colder. Qn Tuesday morning icq formed on the pools to the thickness of 3-16th to £ inch, the Fitzherbert, Po : hangina and Kiwitea hills being covered with snow. Yesterday we had a lighp drizzling rain with the wind from S. to S.E., the glass standing at 30‘3? Ta-day, although the weather is warmer ivnd brighter, the mercury has fallen to 30 T 5. May 16. At Messrs Freeman R. Jackson and Co.’s sale yesterday there was a large attendance and a full entry of stock, nearly
all of which was sold under the hammer. Three-year-old steers brought L2 18s to L 3 ; 18 months to 2 year ditto, 33s to 34s ; forward cows, L2 10s ; weaners, 9s to 12s ; store wethers, 10s lid to 11s; woolly lambs, 6s 91 to 7s 7d ; shorn ditto (inferior), 4s 6d ; ewes in lamb, 7s to 9s ; empty ewes, 6s 5d to 8s 4d. It is currently reported that another medical man is about to establish himself at Palmerston. I hear also that an effort is being made to start a co-operative store, but with what prospects of success I am at present unable to say. It has been currently reported that the Club Hotel has changed hands, Mr N. Valentine, of Wellington, being the purchaser. I am, however, authorised to state that this is premature, no definite arrangements having yet been made. The weather to-day is wet and boisterous, with a falling glass.
