SWIMMING SPORTS.

STAR BOATING CLUB. The annual swimming sports in connection with the Star Beating Club took place on Saturday afternoon, and passed off very successfully. The day was all that could be desired. A nice light wind was blowing from the South, and there was not a ripple on the water. The (balcony of the clubhouse, which was reserved for ladies, was crowded with the fair sex. who took a lively interest In the proceedings. The reclamation Was thronged by several hundreds of parsons anxious to watch the sports.. The total number of entries received for all events numbered 91, which was far tsaore than was expected. The Committee are so satisfied with the sports that next season they will probably carry them out on a much larger scale. Mr K. C. Batkin acted as starter in his usual skilful manner, and Messrs J. M. King and W. J. James judged. Messrs Guy Williams and J. D. Tripe acted as handicappers. Praise is due to Mr A. S. Biss, the energetic secretary, for the manner in which he has supervised. the arrangements. The result of tne sports is as follows : Maiden Race, 50yds.—D. Gage, 1 ; W. H. Morrah, 2 ; C. J. Cooper, 3. Woo easily by several feet; close race for second place. Long Dive.—J, D. Tripe, 1;C. J. Hickson, 2. The winner won with lots to spare. W. Bendall and O. Cooper also competed. The former, though under the water a coasiderabSa time, did not cdVer the distance through bad steering. Coxswains’ Handicap; 50yds.—Hickson {ecratoh), 1. 7 S. Hume (7secs), G-urr (lOsecs), and J. Hume (lOsecs) also started. Hickson, though he gave the others a quarter of the distance, swam, well and won with a little to spare. • . Senior Race (Club Championship).—C. P. Luckie, 1 ; D. Gage, 2. This was nu easyv victory for Luckie, who swam in his usual good form. The first prize for this event is the Captain’s cup. Hardies—H. Batger, 1 ; C. Richardson, 2; G. H. St. Hill, 3. This competition brought out a large field, and some good diving was the result. Rescue Competition.—G. H. St. Hill, 1 ; C. J. Hickson, 2. This event caused much amusement to the spectators. It consisted of a member falling -from about 25 yards from the shore, when the competitor would dive horn the platform and swim out to the rescue, bringing the first-named back to the skids. St Hill was loudly cheered for the way he handled his man and brought him safely to shore. Handicap Race, 200yds.— D. Gage (25seo), 1 ; Morrah (20sec), 2 ; C. P. Luckie {scratch), 3. This event brought out ten competitors, and was a close, and exciting race. Fancy Diving.—J. E. Hume.l; H. Batger, 2. Luckie, Duncan, Barnett, and Cooper also competed. Each competitor had three dives. Hume was very neat in his movements. ' Swimming in Clothes (competitors to wear shirt, coat, trousers, socks, and boots). —J. E. Hume, 1;J. D. Tripe, 2. Seven started. Hume won by about 2 feet. ' Obstacle Race. -K. Duncan won easily, O. Cooper, who was apparently exhausted, having started in nearly every race, coming in second ; W. H. Morrah, 3.
