The U.S.S. Co’s sa Rotomahana left Melbourne at 5.30 pm oa the 4th instant, Hobart 6th, Milford Sound 9th, Bluff next day, Dunedin 11th, Lyttelton at 7.15 pm on Thursday, and arrived here at 8.45 am on Friday. Variable weather was experienced throughout. She sailed for Sydney, via Napier, Gißborne, and Auckland, same night. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company’s R.M.S. lonie, Captain KHley, , from London, via Plymouth, Capetown, Hobart, and Port Chalmere, arrived in port at 12.30 pm ou Sunday, having., loft the latter port at 9.30 am on Saturday. Messrs Devin and Co are the ageDts. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Wakatipu left Sydney on the 11th instant at 4.45 pm, cleared Sydney Heads at 5.40 pm, breasted Stephen Island on the 16bh at 9.45 am, and arrived here at 5 pm on Sunday. Experienced light easterly winds for the first four days out, followed by moderate westerly the remainder of the passage. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Brunner arrived from Westport ah 6.30 pm yesterday. She left Westport at 5.15 pm on the 15th, had Rocks Point abeam at 11 30 pm same day ; rounded Jackson Head at 1.10 pm, and the Brothers at 2 pm on Sunday* and arrived in port as above. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Penguin arrived here at 4.30 pm on Sunday. She left Dunedin at 10 pm on the 14th instant, and arrived at Lyttelton at 5 pm on the ,15th ; left agaffi at midnight, arriving as above. Experienced fine weather till leaving Lyttelton, thence till arrival strong head wind and head sea. The ss Kahu, from Chatham Islands and Lyttelton, arrived here at 6.30 on Sunday night. THE S.S. DUKE OF WESTMINSTER. The ss Duke of Westminster, the first of -the New Zealand Shipping Company’s line of chartered cargo steamers, arrived in harbour at 11 o’clock on Saturday night from Loudon, via way porta. She left London on the 19th November last, and arrived at Capetown on December the 19th ; left again on the 21st, and arrived at Simon 3 Town (South Africa) on December the ?fith ; left on the 27tb, and arrived at Algoa Bay on the 30th; left again on January the 7th, and arrived at East London (South Africa).on January the 10th ; left again next day, and arrived at Hobart on the Ist February ; left again two days later, and arrived at Auckland on the 10th inst,® left again on the 13th, and arrived as above. She is a four-masted iron screw steamer, her tonnage being 2427 tons net register and 3726 tons gross, and her dimensions are—length 400 ft; breadth, 40ft; depth, 28ft. She is a very large carrier, being capable of taking a cargo of 6000 tons. She was built by the Barrow Shipbuilding Company in 1882, and is owned by the Eastern Steamship Company. She has accommodation for 60 saloon passengers and about 600 steerage, but at the present time the steerage apartments are not fitted up, The saloon is situated amidships, and is handsomely decorated. The floor of the saloon is laid with encaustio tiles, and presents a cool and attractive appearance. The officers associated with the Duke of Westminster are as follow :—Captain, J. S. Fox ; first officer, C. Whimper ; second officer, E. J. Clout; third officer, G. Coulter ; fourth officer, W. E. Shouter ; chief engineer, J. Gilmour; second, J. Pullin ; third, R. Runcie ; fourth, W. Grantham ; surgeon, Dr Scutchard ; chief steward and purser, W. E. Trant; refrigerating engineers, Messrs J. McNeil and J. Allan. ARRIVAL OF THE BARQUE PERI, FROM LONDON. The New Zealand Shipping Go’s chartered barque Peri, Captain Steel, arrived from London at 5 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, after a passage of 100 days. • She left London on the 11th November, and experienced the ordinary run of weather throughout. She was berthed at the wharf yesterday. SHIPPING SUMMARY. Shipping matters at this port since the publication of our last summary have been somewhat brisk, especially in connection with the export trade, several vessels having jteen despatched to London and America fully laden with flax, tallow, &c. On the day of issuing our last summary, January 23, the New Zealand Shipping Company’s R.M.S. Aorangi, Captain Sutcliff, sailed for London, via Rio de Janiero, Teneriffe and Plymouth. She took 4S passengers and the following cargol7.lß6 carcases mutton, 1462 quarters of beef, 100 sacks of potatoes, 5 skins of onions, 61 bales of skins, 16S1 casks and kegs of butter, 360 cases preserved meats, 61 hales flax, arid 20 cases merchandise. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s ship Turakino, Captain Power, sailed for Napier on January 25th, from which port she is loading for London. The Shaw, Savill* and Albipa Company’s R.M.S.
Cop'ic arrived in h&fbotir from London, via Plymouth; Thueriffe, Capetown, and Hobart bn jahuary 31. Variable weather was experienced on the passage, and the time from Plymouth occupied 49 days 16 hours 32 minutes, the actual steaming time from the same port being 47 days 4 hours 5 minutes. Her mail was a large one, consisting of 253 bags mails aud 32 boxes parcel post. She brought 2200 tons of cargo, the Wellington portion consisting of 900 tons. She brought 89 passengers for New Zealand, of whom 22 were for Wellington. Various amusements were held on the passage, and passed off very successfully. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s R.M.S. Bimutaka sailed for London, via usual way ports, on February 6th. She took 51 passengers, and the following cargo :—687 bales wool, 39 bales skins, 606 cases preserved meats* 41 bales leather, 18 cases merchandise, 13,659carcasea mutton, 1616 quarters beef, 290 lambs, and 16 sacks potatoes. The Colomal Union Company’s sa Ashleigh Brook left this port for London on the 10th inst.. with a large cargo of frozen meat, etc., which was shipped at Napier. The same Company’s ss Star of Victoria also left for London on the 14th inst. ' The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's ship Duntrune sailed for London on the 15th inst with the following cargo : —25 bales wool, 113 bags wool, 46 bales skins, 1362 bales flax, 456 casks tallow, 102 casks pelts, 39 bales leather. The ss Duke of Westminster, the first of the New Zealand Shipping Company's line of chartered cargo, steamers, arrived in port on the 16th inst from London, via way ports. She has been loading frozen meat for London during the past week. She will probablv sail for Lyttelton to-day to complete her loading. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s ship, Mairi Bhan, sailed for London yesterday morning with the following cargo: 2751 bales wool, 2393 bales flax, 2 bales pelts, 586 casks tallow, and 3 packets of sundries. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s barque Peri arrived in harbour at 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon, from London, after a passage of 100 days. The above completes the ..shipping business for the past month. Happily, no shipping casualty has occurred at the port during the past month.
