MINING NEWS

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, February 10. The antimony lodes at the Great Barrier Islands, discovered some time ago, are to be worked by Mr F. Bucklacd and a syndicate, who will shortly send a staff of miners from the Thames. The syndicate have secured 874 acres of land near the highest point of the island. The Inspector of Mines (Mr Gordon), and Messrs Cadman, M.8.R., Whiteford, Captain Hodge,' and Mr Wilson, have returned to Coromandel from a tour of the goldfields, during which they visited Kuaotunu, Wha. ngapoua, Waiatai and Mahakarau fields. The prospects are veiy satisfactory throughout, and good progress is being made considering the difficulties. On the road from Coromandel Mr Gordon inspected the Lauigan claim at Whanapoua and saw a Btronp reef 4ft thick, with dabs of gold in the solid stone. (PROM OUR OWTN CORRESPONDENT.' Reefton, February 11, The share market is very dull, there being few sales. The mines are in an almost standstill condition for want of water, and if rain does not come soon, the batteries of nearly all the claims will stop ernshing. The Scotia has a good prospect in the winze on the Bouth level, and they are breaking ont a fair stone. The Sir Francis Draks has driven 7ft, and the reef has opened ont to 72ft 6in, showing fair gold. The Inglewood has stopped crushing for repairs. The Merrijigs shaft is down 75ft on the reef, which is 2ft, showing fair gold. The Homeward Bounds are extending the Welcome No. 7 in conjunction with this Company. Hercules —The South level has been extended on the line of reef, and some fairly good quality of stone has been taken out. The Inkerman shaft is progressing satisfactorily. The reef has opened out to sft, and of good quality, and the shares are in much better demand. The Argosy and Lone Star are calling for tenders. The former for crosscutting 150ffc, and the latter are extending the Progress low.level 100 to 200 feet.
