A quantity has been sold below Australian prices. London, February 5. The Carmen’s Union, consisting of 14,000 men, and the Liverpool, Irish, and Scotch dockers of 80,000 men, are amalgamating. The London Dockers, Docks, Wharves, Warehouses, and Granaries Union lock out the men refusing to load the non-union carmen. Tom Mann is endeavouring to prevent a strike of the wool labourers, who allege that they are suffering from several grievances. Brook’s wharf has joined the Burmondsev strikers. The Morning Post considers that the time is opportune for an Imperial (pommission to inquire into the question p,f the penny postal system. A block of buildings, known as Fear’s, has been burnt to the ground, and ten persons, who were unable to get out, perished in the flames. New York, February 6. The National Equitable Lennox Hill Bank, which suspended payment owing to the abstraction of securities, has re-opened. The Republicans have secured quorums in both Houses of the American Legislature. Ottawa, February 4. At a meeting of the Canadian Federation League a resolution was passed expressive of sympathy with the federation movement in Australasia, and urging that periodical conferences of the Federation Leagues throughout the Empire should be held. Melbourne, February 5. Saled—Rotomahana, for the Bluff. A scare occurred in the mining market yesterday, almost amounting to a pauic, and Broken Hill Proprie tary shares fell to L 74, but afterward recovered to L7B. The cause is supposed to be the fact that the output last week fell below the average, but there is nothing else known to warrant alarm. Intense heat still prevails. An actuarial investigation into the affairs of the Premier Permanent Building Association, which recently closed its doors, revealed an extraordinary state of affairs. The Argus, in an article dealing with the New Zealand Primacy difficulty, states that probably it is best to bring the matter before the Supreme Court to obtain an authoritative judgment. If necessary a Bill be introduced in Parliament to legalise a meeting of the General Synod It considers that the scandal of such a deadlock ought to be quickly ended. The Daily Telegraph, referring to the same subject, says that the New Zealaqd Primacy deadlock is so hope less and complete as to be almost ludicrous, and is an odd coincident that two of the greatest posts of the Anglican Church in the colonies, as Sydney and New Zealand, should at the same moment become prey to lawyers, and points to the fact that some fatal flaw exists in the constitution, or it is a discreditable want of sense or business skill on the part of the authorities. SPECIAL. London, February 4. Allpress, who has been arrested on ihe charge of stealing L 70,000 from the Commercial Bank, Melbourne, states that after committing the robbery he escaped to China, thence to America, and subsequently he visited Germany and Monte Carlo, arriving in London a week ago. He was discovered passing a document which had been abstracted from the bank, and property valued at LIOOO has been recovered. It is expected that extradition proceedings will be instituted on Saturday, aud the accused will be kept in custody pending the arrival of a Melbourne detective. It is understood that Mr Campbell, Mr Parnell’s secretary, will obtain L 250 damages and Ll5O costs, to settle his libel action against The Times. Captain O’Shea has retained bir E. Clarke, Solicitor-General, to conduct his divorce case. San Francisco, February 4. Sierra city, California, has been smothered with avalanches, and large numbers are digging for those buried.
