LATEST COMMERCIAL NEWS.

New Zealand Mail Office, Thursday Afternoon. Now that holiday making has subsided and business reverted to its normal condition, there is increased activity in general trade. Harvesting operations up country are keeping all hands busy, and stimulating the ordinary trade demands. The recent advance in the price of Mauritius sugars will have its action before long on the local markets. It has been felt for some time that the recent prices would harden before any length of time had passed. At the present time there is an increased demand for preserving purposes, and stocks are not excessively heavy. The advance in the iron trade in England has had the effect of hardening the local market, and although prices have not risen to any extent, holders are very firm and it is not unlikely that an advance will take place shortly. In general groceries there has been the usual sorting up trade, but in no one article of any prominence have prices altered.
