Durban, January 5. Mr Johnston, British Consul, has promised the British residents protection from the Portuguese. The situation of the Portuguese is considered precarious. Zanzibar, January 6. An engagement has taken place at Saadanir between the troops under Major Wissman and the Arabs, and after four hours’ fighting the latter retired, defeated. At Katunga, a place within the sphere of British influence, the Portuguese searched the Makololos’ canoes, and compelled them to surrender flags given them by the English. Consul Johnson has organised a force from among the warlike tribes of the district, and hostilities with the Portuguese are imminent.
