SPORTING.

EACING. o (By Martini.) After all Hilda went down, in the Auckland Cup, and was even beaten by Lady Norah, who ran into second place. Leopold is manifestly an improved horse (though he picked up a good deal toward the end of last season), and his victory seems to have been an easy one. As I anticipated, Raglan did not get a place, and the fact of his having been put down by Antelope in the Trial Stakes, a mile, at a difference of 31b, shows how ridiculous it was to give him 9st in the Cup. Mr Gollan’s pair, Renata and Jet d’Eau, run unplaced, but the latter will be heard from very shortly if I am not mistaken. Kneecap, who won the hurdle race at Auckland, is owned by Dr. Connolly, of Wanganui, I believe. Mr F. Martin of this city, had a day or two out at the Masterton meeting. On the first day his reoent purchase Retina won him the Waipipi Handicap, Produce Stakes, and Railway Plate, and on the second day Akatea pulled off the Masterton Handicap, that speedy ex-hack; Mermaid running second, and Orator third. In 9pite of his big weight in the Opaki Stakes Forester managed to wio, but that was the only score Mr Tancred made at the meeting, for neither Orator nor Verbose could get better than thirds. Mr T. Thompson had a look in on the second day, when Lancer won him the Jubilee Plate. Clarice, who was sold for the West Coast of tho South Island just after she ran here a month or two ago, has made a very good start in that part of the world, for at the Westland meeting she won a hurdle race, and the Westport Handicap on the second day. The Charmer, who has been good goods for the last two Caulfield Cups, but never quite good enough, won the Hopetoun Cup at Melbourne on Boxing,Day.

English sporting papers and men continue to express contempt for Mr James White’s Derby candidates Kirkham and Narellan. £SOOO to £3OO has been laid against the pair coupled ; they have been called * ugly, three-cornered Walers,’ and a member of Dawson’s stable is said to have declared that * you conld kick your hat faster than they can gallop.’ According to a Melbourne writer Mantoa is very healthy, and doing good work. Carbine is described as * fairly revelling ? in it. This titbit is reproduced by ‘Mazeppa’ from a Tasmanian paper‘Soots Grey won the Jubilee Plate at Auckland on the 3rd inst,, Recluse and Ruby running second and third respectfully.’ It is said to be probable that the nominations for the next Newmarket Handicap and Australian Cup will include Dudu, Maxim, Tirailleur, Gynisca, and Scots Grey. Arsenal, who won the Melbourne Cup in 1886, has been sold to Mr W. Field, a Tasmanian, for 6.00 guineas. According to a Southern writer Ahua is to be tried on the fiat. He is quite fast enough for that game, as the Manawatu people know.

Recluse is to be given a rest to enable him to get over a bad cold. Mitrailleuse has produced a filly foal to Calma (by Yattendon). From a private source I learn that the greit Richard K. Fox, of the New York Police Gazette, will honour the cplonies with U visit in a few months.

The sum of §20,000 was paid in America reoently for a two-year-old-colt, by Wilkes Patch ep.
