The U.S.S. Co’s ss Wairarapa left Melbourne on the 2Sth ult, experienced strong northerly gales and dirty weather in Foveaux Strait, and arrived at the Bluff on the 2nd insfc, making Port Chalmers next day ; sailed again on the 4th. left Lyttelton at S.sopm on Thursday, and arrived here at 11.15 am on Friday. She sailed for Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland same night. The ss Laurence, recently purohased by Mr C. Seagar, on behalf of the Mokihinui Coal Company, arrived’here at 11 am on Friday from Sydney, via Newcastle. She was built in ISS4, and is therefore a comparatively new vessel, and has been engaged in the cattle trade between the Clarence River and Sydney. Some heavy weather was experienced on the way over, during which the steamer behaved wel . Her demensions are - Length, 160 ft; beam, 28ft; depth of hold, Sft. She carries 350 tons of coal (exclusive of bunkers) on a draught of 9ft 6in. Mesars Johnßton aud Co. are local agents for the steamer. ‘The U.S.S. Co.’s ss Arawata left Suva at 11 pm on the 29th ult, and arrived at Russell at 7.15 am on the 3rd inst, sailed again at 7-30 pm same day, and arrived at Auckland at S am on the 4fcb, left Auckland at 8 pm same day ; breasted the East Cape at 4 prn last Friday, and arrived here at 12.30 next morning. After leaving Russell for Fiji a strong easterly and north-east gale, with heavy sea, was encountered, which swept the decks fore and aft, doing damage to tibbihgs and causing the steamer to be slowed down for 24 hours. After leaving Fiji strong easterly winds and heavy seas were met with for the first three days, when it gradually moderated to fine weather, aud continued until arrival. Her Island cargo consists of 12,000 bunches of bananas. The -Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s R.M.S. Coptio left Lyttelton at 2.30 pm on Saturday, and experienced light winds, rain, and mist till arrival here at 9,15 am on Sunday. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Australia left Auckland at 6 pm on the 3rd inst, called at usual way ports, and arrived here at 1 pm on Sunday. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Rotorua left Lyttelton at 10 pm on Friday, and experienced fine weather till arrival here at 2.30 pm on Saturday. She sailed for New Plymouth and Onehunga with the outward portion of the San Francisco mail the same evening.

The ss Kahu left Napier at 5 pm on Thursday, and experienced variable weather till arrival here at 4.30 am on Saturday. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Koranui, from Greymouth and Nelson, having letb the latter port at 11 pm on Friday, arrived here at 1 pm on Saturday. She returned same day. _ The ss Kiwi left Napier at 5 pm on Friday, and experienced variable weather till arrival here at 9.45 pm on Saturday, The U.S.S. Co’s ss Manapquri arrived from Sydney, vja Northern ports, at 9 am on Sunday, She left th§ Company's wharf at Sydney at 5 pm on the 29th ult,, and reached Auckland at 4 pm on the 3rd inst; left again at noon on the sth, called at Gisborne and Napier, and made fast to wharf as above. From Sydney she met with sbiong N.E. winds and head sea till nearing the New Zealaud coast, when it moderated, followed by fine weather and light winds down the coast to Napier, ti.enco experienced moderate easterly and variable winds and thick weather to arrival. She sailed for Melbourne and Hobart, via Southern ports, on Monday. The U.S.S. Go's S 3 Moa left Westport at 1.30 pm on Monday, and experienced a northerly wind till arrival here at 6 next night. Co’s ss Wanaka left Lyttelton at 19 pm on Monday, and experienced a strong N.W. wind aud heavy eea till arrival here at 4 pm next day.“ The U.S.S, Go’s ss Grafton left Dunedin on theGfch, Timaru 7th, Akaroa Sth. Lyttelton at 5 pm on Monday, and arrived here at 1 pm on Tuesday. From Lyttelton to Cape Campbell she experienced strong northerly winds with heavy sea, thence frosh northwest winds with fine weather to arrival. The ss Orowaiti left Timaru at 6 pm on Monday, and experienced a heavy gale, varying from north to north-west, till arrival here at 11.45 am on Wednesday. In consequence of the strong NW gale the steamer Neptune, which started for Blenheim on Tuesday evening, returned to port next day. She made another start the same night. . , _ TT The ss Stormbird, which sailed for Wanganui on Tuesday night, was compelled to return next day, owing to the heavy weather. She got away yesterday.

ARRIVAL OF THE S.S. CAIRNTOUL.

The ss Cairntoul, lately purchased by the Union S.S. Company in order to meet the increasing demand for cargo steamers, arrived in harbour on Saturday morning. She was built on the Tyne early this year by Messrs Palmer and Co., aud is classed IQO Al. Her dimensions are—Length, 26ift; breadth, 37ft ; depth of hold, 16ft Sin. Her tonnage is 1668 tons gross and 1071 tons not, and she is capable of carrying a dead weight cargo of 2630 tons, including bunkers, on a draught of 18ft. She i* fitted with two holds, which are worked from four hatches, with the same number of steam winches. Her engines are of the triple expansion order, and are 155 horse-power nominal, and she is also fitted with steamsteering gear. The steamer has a speed of 9 knots when deep laden, and IQ knots on a light draught, on a consumption of 12 tons of coal a day. Ihe vessel i 3 fitted with four iron and one wood portable bulkhead. She has a neatlyfurnished cabin aft, but has only accommodation for two passengers. We understand that the name of the vessel is to be changed to Taieri. Captain T. D. Dunlop is in command of the steamer, with the following officers : Chief, Mr S. A. Reay ; second, Mr W. H. Heard ; third, Mr D. Hendri ; chief engineer, Mr Dalrymple; second, Mr J. F. Scott; third, Mr McGregor. Of her voyage out we learn that she left Cardiff on 2nd ; June, passed Gibraltar Bth, entered Port

Said 17th, passed Suez 19th, and emerged from the Red Sea on 25 th ; passed Ceylon on sth July, and arrived at Calcutta on 10th ; left again on 4th August, and crossed the Equator on 11th ; passed Cape Leeuwin 23rd, Cape Otway 30th, Cape Farewell 3 pm on Friday, and arrived here at 7.30 next morning. The voyage was uneventful, moderate weather being encountered until the Ist instant, when a S.S.W. gale prevailed until the sth.

ARRIVAL OF THE R.M.S. RIMUTAKA, FROM LONDON. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s R.M.S. Rimutaka, Commander Greenstreet, arrived from London, via Plymouth, Teneriffe and Hobart, at 1.20 pm on Sunday. The following is a report of her voyage :—Left London on July 25th and arrived at Plymouth at 2 pm on the following day. Loft Plymouth at 1.30 pm on the 27th, having on board 136 passengers. Experienced fine weather to Tenerife, which was reached on Ist August at 1.15 am. Coaled there, and sailed on the same day for Capa town. After leaving Teneriffe had the usual trade weather. The Equator was crossed on AugUßt 7th at midnight in Sdeg. west, and from thence had moderate south-east trades till arrival at Cape Town,which was reached on August 16, at 1 pm. Did not coal at the Cape, but stayed there until 6 pm to enable passengers to have a i run on Biioro. Left with a fresh easterly gale, whioh sfterwards changed to W.S.W., accompanied by high sea, which continued until crossingthe meridian of Cape Leeuwin, , aud from thence until arrival at Hobart fine weather was experienced. After landing 39 passengers and 274 tons cargo, left Hobart at 11.59 am. for Wellington, with light N.E. winds and fine weather, lasting until off Cape Farewell, which was sighted on the Bth, at 3.20 am. From time of sighting Cape Farewell, experienced thick weather until ariival. The usual amusements, such as concerts, dances, aud athletic sports were held on board, which the passengers entered into with zest and enjoyed most thoroughly.

ARRIVAL OF THE BARQUE RUD JOSEPHY, FROM NEW YORK.

The barque Rud Josephy, Captain Bradhering, arrived in harbour on Monday afternoon from New York, after a passage of 140 days. She left on the 22nd April, and during the voyage encountered some very rough weather. While running the easting down a heavy sea broke on board, whioh smashed one of the deck beams and and did sundry other damage. She was berthed at the wharf next morning to commence discharging. Messrs Johnston and Co are agents for the barque.
