FOOTBALL.

NATIVES v. AUCKLAND. (per press association.) Auckland, August 24. The football match between the Native team and the Auckland representative players took place to-day, at Epsom. There was a very large attendance of the public. The game was a fast one, bub in the second spell, especially near the close, the Natives were overmatched, and their opponents scored rapidly, the whole of their points being gained after half-time. The match resulted in a victory for Auckland by 7 points to 2. For the local team tries were gained by Lecky and Herrold, and one of these resulted in a goal, whilst Masefield potted a goal. The Natives’ score was two tries, secured by Goldsmith and Elliott. Auckland, August 26. The Auckland team to proceed South on Thursday 4 were finally selected to-day as follows : —Lusk, W. Warhrick, Elliott, W. Wynyard, Breen, Masefield, Jarvis, Herrold, Bees, Braund, Maynard, H. Poland, Reed, O'Connor, Wells, Walker, Baxter, Murray, Hefferman, Hobson and McKenzie. Madigan will not be taken South, while Killing got leave too late. Walker is the new man in the team.

JUNIOB CUP. The heat for the Junior Jup between the St Patrick’s College and the Pitono first nfteens was played at Newtown Park on Saturday afternoon in the presence of a large number of spectators. The match was a very interesting one from start to finish, and was eventually won by the Collegians by seven points to six. In the first spell Malone secured a try for the and Sbeedy bad no difficulty in converting it into a goal. For Pitone, Parker got a try, from which he placed a goal. In the second half the play was fast and exciting. Malone got another try for the College early in the spell, but the kick at goal was a failure, and shortly after Hagger scored for Pitone, and Parker again succeeded in the place kick. Shortly be'ore time Hodgins scored a try for the College from which McMahon placed a soal, and this gave the victory- to the Collegians by one point. For the winners Malone, Haydon, Hodgins, O’Shea and Sheedy played best, and the most successful players for the losers were Tipene, Parker, Maber, Hagger, Wooland and Woods. The other Junior Cup matches played on Saturday resulted as follows Pirate first beat Wellington second by a goal to nil-; Naval first and Union first played a draw ; Epuni second beat Oriental first by five points. THIRD-CLASS CHAMPIONSHIP. The Third Class Championship matches on Saturday resulted as follows : —Union second beat Poneke third by three points to nil; Barr scored three tries for the winners. Wellington College beat Pirate second by a goal and four tries to nil. Pitone second v. Athletic third, won by former by default ; Rival second v. St Patrick’s College second, won by former by default ; Melrose third v. Wellington third, won by former by default. OTHER MATCHES. The representative trial match (fifteen v. seventeen), played at Newtown on Saturday, resulted in a draw, both sides scoring five points. For the fifteen Mclntyre secured a try, from which Moorhouse kicked a goal. Faulkner and Moore also secured tries. For the seventeen Burns kicked a goal frpm a mark and secured a try, and Atkinson (Athletic) also got a try. The members of the Rovers (Association) Club played a scratch game on Saturday. Sides were chosen by the captain (W. Young) and vice-captain (J. Shields), the latter winning by two goals to one. Valentine and Hueston scored for the winners, and Hughes for the' losers. H. Candlish, of Dunedin, played for the winners and showed excellent form. A return match —England v. Scotland—will be played at Newtown Park next Saturday. A match was played on the Manawatu Reserve on Saturday afternoon between the Pioneer and Rapid first fifteens, and was won by the former by seven points to two. Page scored two tries, aud Fenton, Gamble, and F. Marshall one each. Murray kicked a goal from the latter’s try. Johnson and Howard scored for the losers. A match was played on Newtown Park on Wednesday between the Wanganui College and Wellington College, and resulted, after a well contested game, in a draw, each side scoring three points. For the Wellington College Mackay scored a try, which he converted into a goal, and Cooper secured a try for the visitors, from which Andrews placed a goal.
