THE GASPARINI PAPERS.

Much of the discussion which has taken place respecting the printing of the Gasparini correspondence is entirely beside the mark.

The gravamen of the affair consisted nob in the printing alone —for confidential matters are frequently printed for secret discussion in Cabinet —but in the printing and publication of a confidential diplomatic correspondence. Mr Fisher says that all the copies “ except six n remained in his charge. But how about those six ? If a single one got abroad a grave breach of confidence was involved, and Mr Fisher distinctly admits that he “sent two copies to a friend in Dunedin.” This was manifestly an utterly indefensible act. Further, the gist of the papers found publication in a Dunedin journal, obviously being, obtained, directly or indirectly, from Mr Fisher. It appears to us that there is no getting over these admitted facts. They carry their own condemnation.
