CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the City Council was held last week. Present—The Mayor, Councillors Brandon, ChajHiian, Wllleston, Muir, Hai’ris, Fraser, Heaton, Smith, Brown, and Moeller. Tenders. —Three tenders were received for the formation of Grant-road, and that of T. Barton and Co. was accepted. Public Works Committee. —This report (already published) was considered. On the motion of Councillor Willeston the clause to the effect that a reply be sent to the petitioner for a drain to be laid from Lamb-ton-quay to Wellingbon-terraee, that the Counoil is unable to accede to the request, was referred back to the Committee. With regard to Clause 8, that the value of the land at the back of the Graingerstreet properties be fixed for compen. sation purposes at £ls per foot, Councillor Fraser said the Council ought to conserve their land. It was a great pity that city endowments were passing away from them, and he thought it would be wise for the Council to pay the extra £5, as had been agreed upon by the parties. He moved that the clause be referred back. It being pointed out to Councillor Fraser that even if the clause was adopted the Council would still have the power of paying the cash, he withdrew the motion. The report as amended was adopted. City Surveyor’s Report. —The City Surveyor, in his usual report, stated that the average amount of dust, etc., could be brought to the destructor. The cost of working during the past fortnight had been £l6 13s 4d. Accounts. —Accounts amounting to £7672 15s Id, were passed for payment. The Fire Brigade Committee. The Fire Brigade Committee recommended that the 30C0ft of hose which it had been decided to obtain should be ordered at once through the Wellington agents of Messrs Merryweather and Co. ; that a water-gauge be fixed in the tower of the Fire Brigade Station with ;a view of the inightly watch on same being kept, instead of at the Corporation yards ; and that the rent of the rooms occupied by the captain of the Fire Brigade bn reduced by £l3 per annum. Councillor Harris moved the adoption of the report.. The Mayor did not see any warrant for tbe recommendation that the rent of the rooms should be reduced. The salary paid to the captain was comparatively higher than in other towDS in New Zealand, and he thought it would be advisable to leave the matter over until the Organisation Committee could considor.it. On being put, the motion to adopt tbe report was carried. The Sewerage oe the City. —ln accordance with notice, Councillor Chapman moved :—“That a committee be appointed, consisting of the Mayor, and Councillors Smith, Fraser, Harris, Brown and Chapman (mover), to inquire into the best means and probable cost of completing and perfecting the sewerage of the city.” In speaking to the motion, he said they were all agreed that the town ought to be properly Ho

thought that the city ought to be drained into tbo ocean, and not into the harbour. In order to carry out any scheme to complete the work they would have to borrow, and they would probably have to go to Parliament about it. He proposed that the Committee should get some hydraulic engineer to give them an estimate of the cost of the different modes of draining the city, and when they had compared the merits of the respective schemes they could come to tbo Council with a recommendation. Councillor Brandon seconded tbe motion. Councillor Moeller supported the proposal. Councillor Smith suggested that the Committee was too large, and Councillor Brown agreed to retire. The motion was carried.
