New Zealand Mail Office, Thursday Afternoon. Sugars have now seen their highest prioe, and a change for lower rates may be looked for before long. Large shipments of China sugars -are reported as coming down from Hong Kong. Crushing in North Queensland has been stimulated by anxiety to reap the high rates now ruling, and early new season’s sugars are already in the Brisbane market. Advices from Fiji state that the wet season has stopped many of the mills from working, owing to the low density of the cane juices. Kerosene is in fair demand, though there is no alteration in prices. There is an excellent demand for candles. Business generally in the import market may be said to be of a quiet nature. There were about 5,500 sheep; values improved demand ; mutton, 2d to per lb; best wethers, 15s to 18s; mixed sexes, 14s to 16s 6d; ewes, 9s 6d to 13s. Fat bullocks, L 6 to LS 10s ; cows, L2 15s to L 5 153 ; beef, 15s to 17s 64 per 1001 b. Store sheep and dairy cattle good demand. Pig 3, values well maintained ; baconers, 36s to 35s (id.
