OTAGO CENTRAL RAILWAY.

Failing what we deem the preferable course of constructing the Otago Central Railway by means of a landendowed syndicate, we are

disposed to regard the scheme proposed by the Premier as, on the whole, the best that can be devised in the circumstances, and we hope that the Bill will find acceptance at the hands of the House. So large a sum has been already expended on the work that the Colony cannot afford to let it be absolutely wasted, as it would be were the line left where it now ends, and as the extension to Eweburn would open up some fine country and traffic that promises to be fairly remunerative, the case in favour of adopting this course is a strong one, especially as no fresh borrowing is proposed, but simply the appropriation of some of the local land revenue. In this proposal the Premier has grappled with a very troublesome question, and the Bill ought to pass.
