RAILWAY MATTERS.
(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, May 9. Mr J. Philson waited on Mr J. McKerrow to-day on behalf of tho Colonial Sugar Company. He stated that the Company had made arrangements for supplying sugar to the principal merchants in Nelson and Wellington, and asked for a reduction of rates over the portage portion of the line between Auckland and Onehunga. The Commissioner promised that the subject would be considered. It is said that Mr MoKerrow has come to the conclusion that many improvements can be made on the Auckland railways. His attention has bo’en drawn to several awkwark grades which can be eased, and some difficult carves which can be reconstructed. In a reply to a deputation which interviewed him at Kaukapakapa, Mr J. McKerrow said he fully agreed that it was necessary to open roads to feed the Helensville-Kau-kapakapa railway, and a plan of a road from Wainni and the estimate of cost would accordingly be sent to the Minister of Public Works.
