LATEST COMMERCIAL NEWS.

NeW Zealand Mail Office, Thursday Evening. The business of the p?*t week has been of a quiet order, the interruption of the “ fouith ” a'way3 causing a slackness. It is reported that the “ fourth ” did not pass off Eo well as it ahould, and several “tight’ eases were met with. Although the Colony, as a whole, is theoretically during the past quarter richer than it has been for a long time, yet individuals do not at present feel any improvement. Retailers complain that although the prices of produce are higher than they have been for a long time, yet , settlers are spending but very little more than they did in times when trade was decidedly bad. The general opinion is that | whatever extra profit has been lately made by country settlers has in many cases gone , to pay overdrafts and loara raised during ( tie long depressed period, and that it will take at least another six months before the retail traders experience anything like a decided improvement. There are few or no changes to report this week in the local market. Prices all round are nominal, and there is an ab'enee of anything l*ke speculative buying in any department. Messrs Lowes and loins report at their stock sales yesterday : —Some 6000 sheep and 10J head of cattle came forward, beside horses, pigs, &c.
