PALMERSTON NORTH.

(from: oid* * OWN CORRESPONDENT.) April 29. Some idea may be formed of the deplorable state at which the affairs of the Manawatu Road Board have arrived when I say that in view of the annual general election of members one candidate only was proposed on Friday, the nomination day, the number of vacancies being six. The Returning Officer invited nominations for the vacancy in No. 1 Ward (Borough Council), caused by the resignation of Mr Thomas Hall, whose state of health has necessitated his retirement for a time, not only from public affairs but from his business as a storekeeper, in which lie has been very successful. Mr Hall during the time he has occupied a seat on the Council has given close attention to tho affairs of the

Borough. The nomination day is fixed for Monday, May 6th. The new building for the Sunday School in connection with All Saints’ Church is now completed, and is a neat and commodious structure, calculated to seat about 250 people. It is intended to celebrate the opening by a tea meeting, to be held about tho latter part of next week.

Archbishop Redwood arrived in Palmerston by this afternoon’s train from Wanganui, and at once proceeded to the church, where he was received by the Rev Father Patterson and a considerable number of the members of the Catholic congregation. There was quite a large gathering of the school children, the girls being attired in white. These latter knelt on each side of the pathway leading to the church, and received the Archbishop’s benediction. Special services were conducted by his Grace.

At the annual election of the officers of the Palmerston North Volunteer Fire Brigade, held this evening at the engine station, the following appointments were made :—Albert Tingey, captain ; W. Rawlins, lieutenant; Messrs Leigh and Oliphant, foremen ; James Salmon, secretary and treasurer. The Brigade keeps up its full strength and efficiency.
