WESTPORT NEWS.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Westport, May 1, The coal export last week was 2650 tons. I hear that the steamer Herald narrowly escaped being dashed on the breakwater at Greymouth while entering that port last week. The position is said to have been a very critical one. I learn from Denniston that Airs Lawton, continues to improve. Larceny from private dwellings is becoming pretty frequent of late in this district, aud the thief or thieves have up to the present managed to evade detection. Last week the dwelling-houses of Messrs B. Shepherd and W. Lindsay were feloniously entered by some miscreants, and a considerable amount; of silver appropriated in both instances, and on Monday last the residence of Air Dowling, master of the boys’ school here, was visited, and jewellery to the value of about £lO stolen.
