Cricket Averages.

The following batting and bowling averages of players in Senior and Junior Cup matches of last season have been compiled by Mr H. McCardell (secretary of the Association). The batting form shown in club matches during the last season or two has been a decided improvement upon that of the few previous seasons, and this may reasonably be ascribed rather to the advance crickob has made in practice and popularity than to the superior batting form shown by a few individuals. That it was not due to any weakness in the bowling is amply proved by the bowling averages, in which six men obtained an average of less than 10, while by far the greater proportion of the bowlers tried were well inside of a Co3t of 20 runs per wicket. The senior batting list is headed by Moorehouse, who has the excellent average of 40 for seven innings (wnich included no not-outs), Dr. Collins coming second with 34, and Morey third with 27. Cotterill, who came from Canterbury with a first-class reputation, has been rather disappointing here, but one good innings of 50 not out has brought him up to fourth place with an average of 26 for 5 innings. As might have been expected, A. Gore has pride of place in bowling, and his average of 6'6 for 33 wickets is a remarkably good one, and far above anything else on the list. , The batting averages for the Junior Gup are headod by D. M. Fuller, the Rival crack, who astonished us by compiling some sensational scores last season. He has played 5 innings (twice not out) and his average is 124—a record which, wo .believe, has hardly ever been equalled in the history of New Zealand cricket. The other batsmen are, of course, dwarfed by this big scorer, but the averages generally are good. The juniors have the best of the bowling, too ; W. Galloway, also of the Rivals Club, having taken 15 wickets at a cost of 5 runs each, which may be considered extremely cheap. Parsons, of the Rivals, comes second with an averago of 6'2, and C. Taylor (Midland) third with 6.5.

NOTE. —E. stands for Rivals. M. for Midland. St. P. C. for St. Patrick’s College. The two clubs who played the final match are shown, and St. Patrick’s College the club that remained in last before the final. Only double-figure averages are shown in batting, and only those who bowled over 100 balls in the bowling averages.
