The sensation of the Y.R.C. Autumn meeting—and indeed of the week—has been the performance of the New Zealand horses, Lochiel and Carbiue —especially Carbine. The latter, indeed, has proved himself about the beat even of the famous Muskets, and probably the best horse in Australia to-day. I qualify it in that way because it has always seemed to me that in weightfor-age races the three year-olds have a good deal the beat of it in Australia—especially Musketcolts, who are frequently in their prime at three years—witness Fusilade, Martini Henry, Nordenfeldt, and Matchiook. In the Champion Stakes, for iustance, of 32 races 17 have been won by throe-year-olds, aud since 1566 they have been victorious 16 times. However, in the Loch Plate Carbine put up his penalties and even then was able to do Lochiel and Carlyon. The combination of Stockwell and Musket blood (.Stockwell being Mersey’s dam) has produced in Carbine wonderful results ; and tho alliance of Musket with the Traducer strain in Tres Deuce also appears to be a good one, Manton undoubtedly a wonderful colt—having resulted. Carbine’s performances are as follow :

At 2 years —Christchurch Tattersall’s : Won Hopeful Stakes, 5 furlongs, Bat 101 b, lmin s|sec ; Ravenswing, Sst 51b, second ; Rainbow, Sst 51b, third. Canterbury Summer : VVou Middle Park Stakes, 6 furlongs, 7st 741 b, lmin 154 sec ; Ravenswing, 6st 131 b, second ; Manton, 7at 21b, third. Dunedin Autumn : Won Dunedin Champagne Stakes, 6 furlongs, 9st 31b, lmin 19sec ; Manton, Bat 101 b, second; Adulation, Sat 71b, third. Canterbury Autumn : Won Champagne Stakes, 6 furlongs, 9st lOib, lmin 15isec ; Sonmeil, Bat 101 b, second ; tiedwood, Bst 10lb, third. Won Challenge Stakes, 6 furlongs, 7st9lb, lmin 15sec ; Somneil, 7st7lb, second; Ruasley, 9at 61b, third. At 3 years—Flemington Spring : Second in Derby, limile, Sst l’Olb, won by Ensign, Sst 51b. Won Flying Stakes, 7 furlongs, Bsfc, lmin 28isec ; Pippo, 6st, second; Carrington, 6st 41b, third. Won Foal Stakes, 1£ mile, 9st 61b, 2min 12£sec ; Wycombe, 9st 61b, second ; Melo3, 9st 61b, third. Y.R.C. Autumn: Third in Newmarket Handicap, 6 furlongs, Sst 121 b, won by Sedition, 7at 31b, Second in Australian Cup, 2£ mile, Bst 61b, won by Lochiel, Sst 71b. Won Champion Stakes. 3 mileß, 7et 121 b, smin 56see ; Abercorn, 93t, second ; Melos, 7et 121 b, third. Won Allaged Stakes, one mile, Bst 41b, lmin 42863; Sinecure, 6st Sib, second ; Chintz, 6st Sib, third. Won Loch Plate, w.f.a., 2 miles, 9st, 3miu 35aec; Lochiel second, Carlyou third.

She was purchased by Mr O’Brien in 18S7 far £640 guineas, and sold after his win in the Foal Stakes to Mr D. S. Wallace, of Victoria, for 3,000 guineas.

At Wanganui, neither Leopold, Recluse, nor Masthead, who were so much fancied for the Cup, turned up trumps, all oi them going down before that game little mare, Lady Norah, who ran such a game race against Past a in the Wellington Cup two years ago. The grand show Dudu made in the Cup with the crusher of 9st 91b on her back, aud her win in the Wanganui Stakes next day, with 9at 111 b up, shows what a wonderful mare she is ; and that even with 9st 51b she is not out of tie great Autumn Handicap. The great Autumn Handicap weights came oat on Monday, and will be found below. Looking over the weights it seems to me that British Lion, and the two three-year-olds who made such a good show at Dunedin, Vandal, and Occident, are about the pick of tho bunch, with Ruby, who must be dangerous with 7st 121 b on his back. Mon Loup, a worthy son of Le Loup, is also well treated, and the top weight, as I say, is not to be despised. Ahua’s owner will probably now be regretting that he didn’t send the son of Painter and Cornelia over sticks sooner. At Wan.

ganui the gelding seemß to have won both hurdle races with tho greatest of ease. Sedition, who won the Newmarket the other day, has thrown two foals. The Napier Park handicapper has a high opinion of Dudu, judgihg by the amount of weight he has given het in the Napier Citp. The mare's performance in the Wanganui Stakes, however, where she carried 9st 121 b, and easily cut out the mile and a half in 2min 4iseo, entitles her to the greatest respect. Lady Norah is, I think, better treated though, and seems to be, with Recluse, Hilda, Lady Florin, Escutcheon and Strenuous, about the pick of tho bunch. Among the light brigade I like best Foxton, 6st 91b.

V.R.C. AUTUMN MEETING.

Bv Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Melbourne, March 7. There was a lovely day for the third day’s racing. There was an exceedingly good attendance, fully 20,000 persons being present. The feature of the afternoon’s sport was the phenomenal performances of the New Zealand horses Lochiel and Carbine, the former winning the Autumn Handicap, the last mile and a half of which was traversed in 2min 39sec. Carbine’s splendid performance in tho Australian Cup had made him a pr® noUnced favourite for the Champion Stakeß; even money being takeii. O’Brieii rode a very patient raco, and, doming horde at a tremendous bat from the abbatoirs, fairly smothered Abercorn, amidst deafening cheers, which were re-echoed when iteameto be remembered that Mr Donald Wallace’s colt had repeated the performance of Le Grand in 1884 by running into a place in the Newmarket Cup, and afterward winning the Champion Stakes. The race was very slow at the start, but the last mile and a half was cut outin2min374sec, Carbine being four lengths better than that, as he was that distance behind Abercorn when the time was struck. Following are tlie results : Second Hurdle Race, of 250 sovs. About

two miles. Mr Wilson’s Sluggard, list 121 b (Corrigan) 1 Mr Gill’s Whalebone, 9st 101 b (Allen) 2 Mr Ware’s Quilt, 10st 61b ... (Fallan) 3 Tho only other starter was Saxon. Betting—Even on Sluggard. Won easily by a leDgth. Time, 4min 30sec. Nurserv Handicap, of 300 sovs. Seven

Betting—6 to 4 agst Dreadnought, 6 to 1 agst Kichelieu and Tennyson, Bto 1 agst Chintz and Aura. Dreadnought got some lengths the worst of the start, being left at the post, otherwise he must have won, Richelieu only defeating Chintz by half a neck. Time, lmin 3245e0. Auturn Handicap of 300 sovs ; one mile and five furlongs. Mr G. G. Stead’s Lochiel, 9st 91b (Clifford) 1 Mr S. G. Cook’s Mara, Sst 3lb (Rammage) ... ... ••• ••• _••• 2 Mr W. Gannon’s Theorist, SBt 41b (Ellis) 3 The other starters were Recalf, Malua, Oakleigb, Chaldean and Menotti. Betting— Even on Lochiel and Mara, 7 to 1 agst Malua, 10 to 1 agst Theorist, 12 to 1 agst Chaldean, 20 to 1 agst Recall and Oakleigh. Theorist took a commanding lead, but Clifford bided hi 3 time, and romped home the easiest of winners by half a length. Time, 2min 54£min.

The Champion Stakes, of 1000 sovs. Three miles. Weight for age. Mr D. Wallace’s b c Carbine, by Musket —Mersey, 3yrs, 7at 12lb (M. O’Brien) 1 Mr J. White’s b h Abercorn, by Chester —Cinnamon, 4yrs, 9st ... (Hales) 2 Mr W. Gannon’s b c Melos, by Goldsborough Melody, 3yrs, 7st 12ib (Ellis) 3 The other starters were—Volley, Cyclops, and Lonsdale. Betting—Even on Carbine, 5 to 2 agst Abercorn, 6 to 1 agst Volley, 10 to 1 agst Lonsdale and Cyclops. From a slow start Cyclops got away with the lead, but passing the stand Carbine rushed to the front, keeping there until the abbatoirs were reached, when Abercorn took command, maintaining it right away round to the river bend, being then a length in advance of Cyclops, Carbine, well in hand, eight lengths away. Approaching the scraping sheds, Carbine made a forward move, but Abercorn still maintained his advantage into the straight. At the distance Carbine collared Abercorn, and a sharp, decisive struggle ensued, resulting in victory for the Musket colt, who ran home an easy winner by two lengths. Melos was five lengths behind Abercorn, followed by Cyclops, Volley, and Lonsdale. Time, smin 56sec, Thu Special Juvenile Stakes, of 300 sovs. One mile. Mr J. White’s Sinecure ... (Huxley) 1 Mr J. White’s Rudolph ... (Ellis) 2 Mr S. G. Cook’s Milton ... ••• 3 There were no other starters. Betting 6 to 4 on Rudolph, 6 to 4 against Sinecure, and 10 to 1 against Milton. Won easily by two lengths. Time, lmin 464 sec. Free Handicap, of 300 sovs. One mile and

a quarter. Mr W. R. Wilbon’s Chetwynd, 7sfc 21b (Burn) 1 Mr J. White’s Plutarch, 9st 41b ...(Hales) 2 Mr D. S. Wallace’s Retort, 7st 21b (Bloomfield) 3 The'otherjstarters were—Whakawai, The Charmer, Pearshell, Loyalist, Gasburper, Baron’s Court. Time, 2min 94sec. Melbourne, March 8, Lochiel (lOat 71b) has been scratched for

the Place Handicap to-morrow. Carbiue incurs a penalty of a stone in the Loch Plate. Pearlslieli has been scratched for all engagements. Melbourne, March 9. Carbine is reported to have gone lame through the bursting of his hoof during the race for the Champion Staked He is therefore hardly likely to be a startet in any of to-day’s events. MELfioußNfi; March 9. Eot the last day’s racing of the meeting the wfcather iVas unfavourable for a good day’s sport, but tlierb Was a large attendance. Early ih the rriorning it was reported that Carbine had burst li a hdof in the Champion Race on Thursday; but the edsy way in which he romped home in both races to day proves that there is little wrong with him. He fairly romped away in the All Aged Stakes, and had there been anything in the race to ask him to gallop he would in all probability have broken the Australian mile record. With Lochiel out of the Place Handicap, Abercorn was! made a hot favourite, despite the fact that he had the heavy impost of 9st 101 b, and he Went out at even money. The Charmer, in the interest of her stable companion Cyclops, Cut out the running at a terrible bat, but Abercorn gradually Wore her down and won cleverly in Wobdefftil time. The win of Mr J. Colt’s gelding Pestal in the Steeplechase with list 71b up was the cause of a hearty demonstration, notwithstanding that Loughlin’s Game and Miller's Eaglet were favourites. In the Loch Plate Carbine again showed his superiority, and notwithstanding that he put up a stone penalty, he secured the judge’s verdict by a head from Lochiel, though it is said that Wallie Clifford made too much of his mditiit in the early part of the race. The following are the results 1— All Aged Stakes, of 10 sovs each, with 490 added ; weight for age. One mile. Mr D. S. Wallace’s b c Carbine, by Musket Mersey, 3yrs, Sst 41b (O’Brien) 1 Mr J. White’s Sinecure ... (Fountain) 2 Mr J. Wilson’s Chintz ... (McDonnel) 3 Russley and Nerissa also started. Carbine went out favourite at 7 to 4 on, 7 to 2 against Sinecure, 8 to 1 against Russley, and 10 to J against Chintz and Nerissa. Carbine went to the front at the start, and was never asked to gallop, winning in the easiest possible manner in a canter by two lengths and a half. Time, lmin 42sec. Unplaced Two year-old Stakes, sweep of 5 bovs, with 200 added. Mr S. Miller’s Elfie (Howard) 1 Mr A. Davies’Doris .. (Huxley) 2 Mr A. Scott’s Lydia Hawthorn (Tomlin) 3 The other starters were —The Wild Cat, Copenhagen, Loch, Lord Dudley, _ The Serf. Gasperone, and Lapstone. Lochiel (the winner of the Australian Cup) left the paddock with odds of 5 to 2 laid on him, {while Carbine had 7to 2 laid against him. Mr White’s representative went out at 4 to 1 against. On the fall of the flag Clifford rushed Lochiel to the front, and nothing was done until a mile had been traversed ; but here Mick O’Brien brought up Carbine, and, disputing every yard of the way home, he wore down Lochiel, and won a ding-dong race by half a head. Carlyon was eight lengths away. Time, 3min 35sec. Farewell Handicap, a sweep of 5 sovs. with 200 added. One mile. Mr W. S. Hickenbotham’B Fishwife, 7st 121 b (Walker) 1 Mr J.
