Tho death of a well-known man is recorded in our cable messages in another column. The Bov John George Wood, M.A., F.L.S.. was the son of a surgeon, and was born in London in 1827. He entered Merton College, Oxford, in 1844, and was elected Jack, son soholarin 1845 ; graduated B. A. in 1848, and M.A. in 1851. In 1857 he became assistant chaplain to St Bartholomew's Hospital. In early life he devoted much of his spare time to the study of zoology, and has earned a reputation for his works on that subject. Amongst other works he was the author of “Popular Natural History." “ Sketches and Anecdotes of Animal Life,” “ The Boys’ Own Natural History Book,” and “My Feathered Friends, or Bird Life.” Some years ago he brought out a series of cheap works on “Common Objects of the Seashore,” “The Country,” “ The Microscope,” &c. His great work was however, his “Natural History,” now a standard text book. He wrote several works on religion, including “ Old and New Testament History ” for the use of schools. He edited for some time the Boys Own Magagine. His more recent works are “ Man and Least Here and Hereafter,” “ Nature’s Teachings, etc." In 1879 he began a aeries of *• Sketch Lectures ” on Zoology, whioh were delivered in all the principal institutes in England and Scotland. M. Clemenceau hopes to be in London early in the new year. There are 136,000 drink sellers in Belgium, or one for every 10 families.
