The Wairau annual regatta was held at Spring Creek to-day in the presence of 2000 spectators. They beat the Blenheim crew by a quarter of a mile. ' In the pair-oar inrigged race the Blenheim R.'C. heap tfie Telegraph R.C. by a bojiple of feet.
The first two heats qt the f‘ Presidents Fours” (Wellington Rowing Club) werg jrowed last JTrjday. The competing ere\ya in the first heat were—Goer (stroke), Brown (No. 3), Carter (No. 2), W. Rpse (bow) y. Hill (strojte), Marks (No. 3 , Murray (No. 2), and Richards (bow), the former winning by about a length. When about 300 yards from home one of Hill’s crew caught a crab, and but for this mishap the finish would have been very close. In the second heat W. Bridson (stroke), Ryan (No. 3), Burns (No. 2), and D, Hyde ibow) beat E. Rose
(stroke), G. Barber (No. 3), W. Ross (No. 2), arid. G. West (bow), by about a length rind a ha'f. Mr E; B. Brown started and Mr A. G. Johnson (captain of tho Club) judged thS races. The bourse 'dias frorri Thomas’ Point to the Club’s(shed;
The Oriental Boating Club got Off a sailing race on Saturday. The course was from the Club’s shed to the dolphin off the Slip wharf and back. Four boats were entered, but only three competed. Mr Tringham's Mata was the first to get away, but Sir H. Thomas’ lolanthe was first home, the Mata being second, and Mr Muir’s Kestrel third. The Kestrel, however, takes second place on her time allowance.
The rowing of the heats for the Fitz Gerald Fours (Star Boating Club) will be begun on Saturday afternoon. If possible, all the heats will be got off. The competing crews are as follow : —W. J. Biss (No. 2), C. Pearce (No. 3), W. Copeland (stroke). Two more heats of the President Fours (Wellington Rowing Club) were got off on Tuesday,when Waters (strke), E. Barber (No. 3) Gamble (No. 2), Williams (bow), Dix cox) beat Jenkins (stroke), Simm (No. 3), E. D. Barber (No. 2), Lawlor (bow). Tripe (cox) by about three lengths, and McKay (stroke), G. Barber (No. 3), W. Parsons (No. 2), Willcocks (bow), Tripe (cox) beat W. Barber (stroke), Little (No. 3), Hyams (No. 2), Hickson (bow), Dix (cox) by over a dozen lengths. Mr Bridson (vice-captain) started the first race, and Mr W. Hearne the second. Mr A. G. Johnson (captain) judged the races. The rowing of the heats will be continued this evening if the weather is favourable. A meeting of the Committee of the Wellington Rowing Club washeld attheßoyalOak Hotel oa Tuesday night. There was a good attendance, and Mr A. G. Johnson occupied the chair. It was decided that the Club should be represented at the Christchurch Regatta on the 18th instant in the senior four-oared outrigged race, champion pairs, double sculls, and sculls. It was stated that the “Young ‘ vase,’ which was won by the senior crew at the regatta on the 23rd February, was at Mr A. R. Hislop’s, havmg the name of the' Club engraVed on the plate. !fhis trophy, together with the Uriion Company’s crip, which was also tvon by the senior crew at the recent.regatta, arid which ib now the property of the Cjub, wijl be shortly on view at Mr A. R. Hislop’s shop. It was decided that the gold medals and jackets for the members of the champion crews shoulfi be presented to thoqi in the poqrae of a few weeks. It" was decided that the Club’s sheif should be renovated, and after some othpr matters of a routine character had been transacted the meeting adjourned with tfio usual compliment to the qhaii.
