The City Rifles will fire a friendly rifle match with the Featherston Rifle 3 on Saturday next, at the Polhill Gully range, 10 men a-side ; ranges—2oo, 300, and 500 yards, seven shots. The country team will arrive on Friday evening. The Wellington Rifle Association’s annual meeting takes place at Polhill Gully range on the 21st and 22nd of this month. The programme is a very attractive one, and consists of five matches, which are as follow : Ladies’ Match, ten shots at 200 and 300yds ; VVairarapa Match, seven shots at 200 and 500yds ; Licensed Victuallers’ Match, seven shots at 200, 300 and 500yds ; Garrison Match, ten shots, 300 and 500yds; and Teams Match, seven shots at 200, 300, 400 and 500yds. The prizes for the Ladies’ Match have been collected by the ladies of this city, who have apparently", put their souls into the work and furnished what will no doubt be keenly contested for. A certain number of prizes are given this year to young shots, with the idea of encouraging them. These prizes will be shot for in conjunction with the first match. These prizes will be offered only if there are a sufficient number of entries, and the conditions are as follow : —Junior shots will mean those who have never won a prize at auy rifle meeting. They will be allowed to compete on becoming members of the Association, and on paying the entrance fee for the first match. They will, of course, only be able to win the prizes that are laid down for juniors, but their scores can count for the aggregate prizes should they determine to fire through the remainder of the meeting. This will mean a certain amount of additional expense to the Association, and it is to be hoped that the young shots will bliow their appreciation by rolling up in goodly numbers on the night of entry, the 16th inst. It is believed that this meeting will be one of the most successful ever held. There is a probability of a large number of competitors coming from a distance.
