Final payments for the Wellington Cup and general entries for the W. B. C. Summer Meeting, are due on Wednesday. Mr Tanered’s gelding The Spy, for whom no bid could be obtained at the Mutt the other day, has been paying well for his oats since. At Island Bay he won two races, at Masterton one, and at Rangitikei two. At the latter place The Spy pulled off the two big eventß of the meeting, the Rangitikei Handicap on the first day and the Railway Handicap on the second. Altogether, since no one would bid £6O for him at the Hutt he has started in six races and won five, finishing second in the other. Not at all a bad one ! It is rumoured in Sydney (says the Sportsman) that the Hon. J. White and Messrs J.H. Want and F. Hill contemplate a trip to England next year. The two colts intended by the former gentleman to take part in the classic races in England and France next seaßon are shortly to arrive at Randvvick, and will he shipped for England early this year. At the Oamaru races a disgraceful thing happened in connection with the Novel race, * Mazeppa ’ tells the story thus: There were four starters, Plunger winning apparently with the greatest eaße, notwithstanding that its rider was desperately pulling the horse coming up the straight. A protest was lodged by the owner of Julia on the gronnd that Plunger had run round a post. The evidence of Murray, the rider of Julia, was that he was leading near the tbree-quarter-mile post with the inside running, when Plunger came up and ran inside the post. Tripp, the rider of Plunger was then called before the stewards and admitted running inside the post. The stewards, suspecting that this was a gross attempt to defraud the public, decided to inspect the spot, but could find no trace whatever of any horse running round the inside of the post, and Tripp was again called up and warned that unless he disclosed the truth of the affair he would be severely dealt with. He thereupon admitted that he did not run round the post; that it was an arranged thing ; and that the instructions given to him by Mr Henry were that he was not to win, He was told after the race to say he had run round the post. Murray was again called, but, although cautioned, persisted in saying that Plunger ran round the post. The stewards thereupon resolved—- ‘ That the race be awarded to Plunger ; that the totalisator pay out on Plunger ; that the horse Plunger and its owner, Mr Henry, and also the horse Julia be disqualified ; that the protest money, £2 2s, lodged by the owner of Julia be forfeited ; that the boy Murray be disqualified ; and that, in consideration of the lad Tripp having disclosed the truth, he bp only severely reprimanded.’ Tripp was then oalled before the meeting and told of its decision, and was informed that the stewards would carefully watch his movements for the future, and that if at any time he was found riding in an unfair or dishonest planner, or misconducting himself in any

way, he would be severely dealt with. They hoped this would bo a lesson to him, as the stewards were determined not to countenance any frauds of that kind. The action of the stewards was highly commended, but it was generally thought that both owners, horses, and jockeys should be disqualified. The gross winnings of the Dwyer Bros, on the American turf this season run up to 129,135d015, or about £25,827. In 1886 they won about £50,000.

New Zealand is well represented in the Australian Newmarket Handicap, by Locbiel, Cuirassier, Enfilade, Carbine, Tranter, Whakawai, Niagara, Pearlshell, Cinderella, and Volley. If Carbine turns out, as I believe he will, to ba only a sprinter, he must be a real good one at three-quarters of a mile ; and with "Whakawai and Cinderella also in it, Maoriland should have a good show of winning a second Newmarket Handicap. Mr Stead apparently intends to have a cut in at the big things in Australia, seeing that he has got Maxim and Gipsy King nominated for the Australian Cup. Cuirassier is also apparently meant for the other side, and as he appears to be improving, the full brother to Trenton ought to give a good account of himself. The Dunedin Cup weights have been started low, Carbine and Manton being on top with Bst 121 b each. Probably both of them will be over the water by the time the race is run. British Lion, however, strikes me as being very leniently treated with 7st 121 b, and if he continue well he will be particularly dangerous. Son-of-a-Gun (7st 51b) and Exchange (7st 31b,) also look like good goods ; and the last mentioned three are, I fancy, the pick of* the basket. Betting on the Wellington Cup and other coming events has been pretty brisk during the week. Messrs Nathan & Yuille report business at the following prices : WELLINGTON CUP. 4 to 1 on the field 4 1 agst Sultan and British Lion 5 l Dudu, Manton, and Lochiel 6 1 Silence 8 1 Whisper 10 1 Remington 100 8 Little Scrub (off) WELLINGTON AND DUNEDIN CUPS. 100 to 6 on the field 100 100 100 100 100 100 100 100 Books are also open on the Australian Cup and Newmarket Handicap, in doubles or straight out.
