A SEVERE SHOCK OF EARTHQUAKE.

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Greymouth, December 27. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt tonight at 30 minutes past 9. The direction seemed to be south to north ; the duration was only a few seconds, but slight tremors were felt a considerable time after. Christchurch, December 27. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt here at 9.28 p.m. ; direction, N.W. to S.E. The apparent duration was a quarter of a minute. It began with a short, heavy thud. The Bhock was followed by a lateral vibration, which gradually died away. Some alarm was caused, but no damage is reported. The town clock was stopped by the shook. The earthquake was felt severely at Waikari, where it lasted several seconds, and was accompanied with a sound like thunder. It was also severe at Waiau, but at Cheviot, 22 miles north of that plaoe it was not Bevere. The shock was sharp at Sefton, Aangiora, and Kaiapoi. No damage is yet reported in those districts. Some consternation was created in the theatre, and in the Salvation Army barracks, where a woman fainted, but there wa3 no severe panic.
