With reference to the reported gold find at Upper Hutt, Mr George Aldous writes to us as follows :—“A man came to town on Saturday last and said he was the prospector of the new goldfield near the Upper Hutt. He said the field was exceedingly rich, and that he fully believed that from the prospects he obtained it would yield at least 50oz of gold to the load of washdirt. He said there was any amount of good payable ground both on the river-bank and in the river-bed, which he had tried. After making what I considered a reasonable allowance—say, about 1000 per cent—l thought it was good enough to go up and see the nuggets of gold he said he had got up there. The gold was duly brought forth, which he says was obtained by him and party during last week- ; and judging from my 30 years’ experience on the various goldfields of Australia and New Zealand, I should say they have fully two grains of pure gold, possibly two and a half grains, value about 4Jd. They were still fossicking about the creek aad river-banks, not where he says he obtained the rioh prospects. Mind you, I don’t say they will not possibly find payable gold in the district, bat for my part, to use old digging parlance, tho gravel looks too raw and hungry. There is an absenoe of that well-known look that pleases tho eye of those who have had much experience on the goldfields. However, to those who want a nice day’s outing, they could not do better than select some fine day and go up by train to the Upper Hutt. It is about an hour and a half’s walk on a good road right to the field, but don’t stumble over some of those 50oz nuggets and hurt yourself.” A chapter of accidents which for tho time being caased immense excitement, occurred on Wednesday in connection with, some boat races which were being got off by the Wellington Rowing Club. The crews who were competing in a heat of tho Stewart Fours went out to the starting point (on the northerly course) about 6 p.m., and at that time the water was quite smooth. Before the race was half over, however, an easterly sea came up, causing an unpleasant jobble. This got so rough that when the starter’s (Mr W. Bridsou’s) boat arrived off the Railway Wharf it was swamped, and the occupants thrown into the water. A boat from tho barque Chili put off to their assistance, and they were soon extricated from their somewhat precarious position. Meanwhile a pair-oar outrigger, in which Messrs Kilner and Barber were out practising, had a similar experience, but by the promptitude of the captain, who sent the Electric Spark to their assistance, they were saved from anything more unpleasant than an involuntary bath. As it was, all ended happily, and the raoe was concluded to the satisfaction of all parties. Seven more entries for the scholarships given by tho Education Board werereoeived on Wednesday, which brings the total number of competitors up to 94. Of the additional entries three are from the Hutt school and four from Kilbirnie. As the entries were Eosted before the date of closing, they will e accepted, and - tbo senders allowed to compete.
