HAVELOCK.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) s’-. . Havelock, November 14. _ Gold is reported to have been found in payable quantities on the terrace opposite Davis?,' at Cullensville. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, before Mr F. Severn and Dr Drury, J.P.’s, Benjamin Davis was Sued 5s and [coats 4s for keeping a dangerous dog at the Blaok Boar. John Boyd was ordered to enter into recognisances to keep the peace for six months toward John Glover at Blackball. ’The Pelorus Road Board have this day let No. ■ S contract in three subdivisions— No. 1, to Wilson, about 22 chains, at £1 9s; No. 2, £1 13s 4d, to Lyell and Co. ; No. 3, £2 7s 6d, to McGrath. The Chairman (Mr A. Hyde), opened and let the tenders, subject to the approval of the Minister of Mines. November 15. It-has been very generally understood in this, the Pelorus district, that 1/500 had been ; voted for a track ' between Havelock and' Mahakipawa, and it has been very broadly stated that L3OO. of that amount has been spent on the ..wharf at The Grove, and in consequence we must be content with a three-foot track instead of one 6ft in width. When the'present member ■ for this, the Waimea-Picton electorate, - was a candidate for the constituency at the nomination held here on the 17th September, 1887, he promised us we should have a dray road between here and Mahakipawa. How that promise is being fulfilled let the foregoing testify. Whilst on this subject would it not be advisable for the Mahakipawa subdistrict of the Pelorus Road Board to be annexed to the Picton Road Board ? The Picton press has from time to time spoken of the present Mahakipawa diggings as the Picton diggings. By all means let the Picton Road Board be allowed to take over that portion of this district, and with it the responsibility of making the tracks, &c., and then possibly the present miserable bridle track between Picton and The Grove may in due}time be converted into a passable dray road. We should not by any means be losers thereby, and ultimately a through overland route for wheeled traffic would be established betwixt here and Picton. Havelock, November 19. Owing to the wet weather lately, but comparatively little mining has been done, but yet the yield upon the whole may be deemed satisfactory. The Maoris at Mahakipawa have obtained over 40oz. Scaife and party’s ground is still payable. Aldridge and party have sold out for L2OO, and Jones and party from a paddock 12ft square got 560 z. Beauchamp has sold his share for L3O. Rush and party have suffered much from the wet weather, a great deal of their work being rendered practically useless. Hart and party are reported to have bottomed'at Waikakaho.

It is not at all unlikely that we may hear of a rush down the Pelorus Sound, at North-west Bay. Several parties have gone down there, and many are satisfied with their prospects. Again, there are reports of gold being found at the “ World’s End,” Pelorus Sound. Schenkle and party got 7oz on Thursday, and four sailors, who are working on a terrace 100 ft above the prospectors’ claim at Mahakipawa, are reported to be doing well. There are only five claims yet bottomed in the main creek, which, as yet is in its infancy, as the sides are perpendicular, consequently the wash dirt has to fee “ slaged ” from the bottom. Active operations are being taken in the reefs, numbers of men being employed. The Maori Gorge Company, at Wakaxnarina, are to commence operations today (Monday), November 19. No great amount of damage was done by the gales during the past week, Messrs Brownlee and Co. ’s sawmill, at Blackball, being partially unroofed, also that of a stable at Havelock suburban, and a few trees uprdbted. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Havelock, November 21. Smith and Sons’ steam launch arrived last night. She was brought to the mouth of the Sound in one of the Union Company’s boats from Wellington. She is intended to take cargo. The following applications in the Warden’s Court were granted :—A tail race at Mahakipawa [to Dillon and party, an amalgamation of Waikakaho to G. Parkes and party, a tail race at Mahakipawa to R. Newmann and party, a water-race at Wairau to R. Gee, an amalgamation at Mahakipawa to S. Mason and party. Licensed holdings were granted to C. Longhurst and party and the Karori Company. The following applications were adjourned for survey:— T. G. Sunson, Golden Hill Company ; J. R. Skelley, Duchess of Albany Company; G. Mackay, Success Company. Adjourned for 14 days: —J. Newth, Silence Company; W. Duncan, Kapai Company; H, F, Logan, Waikakaho Company. Resident Magistrate’s Court business: Weir v S. Mason, claim LI 2s, judgment for amount, with costs 14s. Weir v D. Mason, claim LI 14s Id. Judgment for amount, with costs 14s. One’ application for a tail-race from Thompson and party, Mahakipawa, had to be adjourned, as the objectors and applicants could not agree. Probably it

will bo decided by the warden visiting the grounds. :
